Lone Star Kingwood 2010

Published

Hello everyone!

I just wanted to start a new thread for kingwood/cyfair applicants. This is the moment I have been waiting for for 2 years! :nurse: I will be turning in my application when I return from vacation next week. My score is at 11.489 as of yesterday! I took the Hesi....again....yesterday :D and will be going on vacation Mon. I don't think my score has gone in yet either.

Anyway...I'm hoping that my score will be good enough for this time around. What was everyone elses score? I think the cut off the last couple years has been 11.4.

I have created this thread because I know that this site has been extremely helpful for me! And I want to return the favor for whoever else is applying or working towards applying! Also, in order for us to chat or whatever else while we are waiting soooo long for a letter! :banghead:

If ANYONE has any questions...just ask and I will try the best of my ability to answer it. I know quite a bit about this program, so I'm sure I can help in some way! :heartbeat

Hi everyone and congrats on your acceptace! :yeah: I am applying to the Kingwood program to start (God willing) in Spring of 2011! I have a day job that I need to keep and will need the evening/weekend classes. I know how the ranking goes of the 12 points and it seems that around 11.4-11.5 are needed for acceptance into the Kingwood program...how is the day vs. evening classes decided? I really can't quit my day job, :uhoh3: I have a family, so is it just basically a risk I'm taking that I won't get evenings or how does that work? Thank you so much!!

Hope everyone has a great time on their first few days of school!! **Hopefully** I'll be there soon!

The way they did it this year......when they sent our acceptance letters, there was an intent to enroll form. It asked which days were your first choice, times like evening and day....things like that. And basically it was a first come first serve. You fax, mail, or bring the signed info to them. After all of that, you go to orientation and they give you info on background check. After you do the background check, you wait till you get the "all clear" postcard in the mail and THAT'S when you want to hurry and get that card to them because like I said, first come first serve. You can't register for classes until you get that card. When I registered they had my intent to enroll right there with all my other paperwork....so she knew what my first choice was. As for the job, I can't say anything b/c I haven't actually started yet....will on Tues....but from what we heard about the program, it is not recommended that people work full time unless they have to. Many people go to part time and from what I've heard people say, it is still extremely difficult. Good Luck!!!! I hope ya get in! And hope I answered your questions!

I am a Nursing III student and am in the night program. I am a wife, a mother of four kids, work full time, and go to nursing school full time. I will not lie, it is extremely hard to do all this simultaneously.... one of my roles always suffers at some point in the semester, but I do what I have to do to keep it moving. In the night program almost all of us, at least 80% of us work full time and have managed to remain in the program while doing so... you do what you have to do. Congrats on applying to program, if you do not have A's in the 1st 3 courses (A&P I or II, Intro to Pscyhe and Comp I) I would suggest you go ahead and retake it this semester so that you will be set to apply in the summer.

To the Nursing I students, strap your boot straps, I hope you're ready for this wild but exciting ride. If any of you need help, please message me here and I'll do what I can to help you. Try not to get overwhelmed, pay attention to your power points in class for studying your exams, if you can not read every single page, read most of what you can (trust me, there will be exams with like 11 chapters of reading covered in about 3 or 4 days...you do the math) tape your lectures if you can... the Nursing I instructors are awesome, you'll love them. Congrats to all of you!!!

Out of all the techniques possible, what do you think is the best way to prepare for your exams? What happened on your first day of clinicals?

I am so ready for the ride trust me. And I have much respect for the ones who do this with children, full time jobs, etc. Bless you in all that you do!

All of us should definitely remember that when we feel like we are going to break and can handle it no longer, there is someone out there somewhere who has a lot more on their plate than us! Congrats and Good Luck to everyone!

for all those in the program, do please check in to this site once in a while. I may have questions as to how things are going.

Anyhoo, I get bored sometimes and end up searching and reading about nursing stuff, seems like Littmann Classic II S.E. (or light) and the GRX CD27 stethoscope are good for their price. There is a while section on allnurse for stethoscope. Just throwing this out for those that need some. Ohh, and appearantly stethoscope.com (i think this was it) is not a good place to order from.

GL on the first day! Remember to smile! I know i would be (all day long at that).

Just started yesterday but, all ready feel that I am going to be so overwhelmed with school, work, and family. But, school is the most important of all. If anybody want to exchange numbers, let me know and I will exchange numbers with you.

Tomorrow you guys should be having Clinical Orientation, we all are :yeah: Your first semester you guys will be in LTAC and rehab facilities. Our first day was scary, exciting, and an eye opener all in one! This semester in clinical you all will focus on vital signs without machines, bed baths, making an occupied and un occupied bed, nursing assessment, and at the end passing out meds to your patient. I know it may be scary but when you first walk into your patient room, walk in with confidence. A patient does not want someone frightened to take care of them. Walk in with a smile, you never know how much a smile in those type of facilities make the patients day. When you come to clinical, be prepared with all of your materials i.e. stethoscope, pen light, at least 3 black click pens, your watch, a clipboard if possible and NO GUM. Your instructors are expecting you to act as professional student nurses, don't let them down. The same instructors you have this semester you will probably have next semester so don't start off on the bad foot.

I really can't tell you how to study for exams as everyone is different and even now at Level III you would think I have a method down but honestly I do not. In First Steps to Success did you guys learn how you learn the best? If you did, that's how I would tell you if you are keen to study groups, get with people in the SAME category as you. If you are not keen to study groups, do not force yourself into one, it may just winde up hurting you more than helping you. If you learn by hearing tape your lectures and listen to them in the car, MP3 player etc, if you learn by doing try to act out what you are reading, etc. visualize what you are reading, you will soon learn that nursing exams are nothing like your pre-req exams... they are mostly application based. I would advise all of you to buy the book Fundamentals Success and Test Success. They both will be your best friend in Level I, and if you master those, you may do better on your exams than some of your class mates ( I bought the book and never opened it until Level II) Go over your Powerpoints before every exam, take the section that was went over in the Powerpoint go to your textbook and study that section. Take all of the NCLEX review tests at the back of your required chapters and on the Evolve website. Set aside time each day to read even if it's for an hour. I do not reccommend CRAM exam sessions. If that works for you, you may burn out by the end of this semester. I tell you this by experience and I would only set all of you up for success.

Walking into your first day of clinical it's going to hit you. I am officially a student nurse. :nurse: I wish you all good luck tomorrow, please let me know how it went for all of you and if you have any more questions, please post them :lol2:

when do ya'll have lecture, lab, and clinicals? I have lecture at 1230-350, clinical on wed to triump, and lab i just got it changed to 8 am on tuesdays...

Clinical was so much fun today. It wasn't exactly what I thought it would be, The atmosphere was more relaxed, I think, than the other classes. I really enjoyed meeting all of the clinical instructors, even the ones that weren't mine. I enjoyed meeting the other student that are going to be in the same clinical as me. :twocents:

Good to see that everyone is having fun.

I'm curious what study materials you use for the tests.
