considering starting the legal nurse consulting program through kaplan university... any input about their program or LNC in general? also thought about forensic nursing...perhaps both?

I am unfamiliar with Kaplan U's course. There are others on the site that can answer that question.

I also took the Milazzo Inst. course. I took it Feb. of this year. I've signed up for the apprentice 2-day class in Denver, Co. for next month. Did you take the 2-day class?

I'm currently working in ambulatory care and applied for a per diem position in the Infusion Center and as of last Thursday I was offered a position. So I'll be looking at the ins and outs of that.

Just curious...how busy are you and about how long did it take you, with diligent effort, to become busy...I have been looking into this, as this seems to be up my alley...I'm sure though it takes a while before you can quit your day job...lol. Off topic: my mom sent me an article the other day about vickie milazzo...she had no idea who she was, but said this was her good friend's daughter. I almost died...feeling a little starstruck, as she has made such a huge name for herself in the LNC world. My mom said she actually has met her on several occasions. Told her I should be able to get a discount or something...lol. Won't hold my breath.

good for you. i am glad to see you have made agreat proffesion out of nursing. i am still soooo undecided. but i am just new to the RN experience. i do know that i do not want to work in long term care or skilled for my nursing career. so many other exciting avenues to venture. i have to be honest i am not sure what pm means so if you let me know i eill and then we can discuss in detail the LNC. thanks again

I am struggling with the same dilemnas as mlwRN, forensics vs. lnc, kaplan vs. Milazzo, both or neither. I find the thought of forensics much more intriguing, but realistically there are more employment opportunities as a lnc. I base that on the fact that there are 10,000 malpractice lawyers and insurance companies for every one medical examiner. Both Kaplan and Milazzo are approx. the same price, but each has their pros and cons. I have seen good reviews of Kaplan in other threads, but it takes up to a year and all you get is a certificate (not certification). Milazzo's course is also well recommended, only 6 days long (for the conference), and you receive CLNC behind your name. On the other hand the value of CLNC is debatable, and I, for one, am reminded of late night infomercials promising get rich quick schemes when I view her webpage. This may be a little harsh, but I am slightly pessimistic when it comes to parting with $3,500 plus hotel and travel expenses. Any input would be appreciated while I weigh my options. Especially from SIRI, if you're still reading this thread. I already know that you've benefitted greatly from the Milazzo course. Does it really teach the marketing and business side that you mentioned many nurses (including myself) lack. I've been told that I'm a people person (at least, that's what all my imaginary friends say), but am concerned that won't be enough to find work. Thanks to anyone who responds.

i apologize for the late reply to this question.

i took the 6 day apprenticeship. the two day apprenticeship is full of marketing tips. a rather large class as well. the 6 day apprenticeship has only 6 students in the class. a one-on-one experience, too. full of wonderful tips for marketing. you have a very experienced clnc who has his/her own office set up for you to walk through and take notes to learn how to do your own office, if that is the way you want to practice. she/he gives you pointers on the library you need in order to practice. how to utilize the vast website for research during a case development. just many valuable marketing tips for you. ask a question as a group or personally.

you actually go to the court room and sit in on a trial with jury regarding medical malpractice. you witness a deposition. you get to work on your own case, too.......with feedback from the instructor. at the end of the apprenticeship, you will have completed a review for merit, experienced how to sort through the medical record and place into "chart format". review and apply the deviation/s from soc. name all players involved. utilize a template on the method of reporting you choose. create an affidavit, request for production, recommendations to the attorney-client, interject the clnc's findings, complete a time table........you will learn how to bill your client, fees, keep with your billable time, year-to-date summary, etc.

you are given the templates for all this and more. yes, the 6 day is more expensive, but, it was the best money i spent.

at the end of the apprenticeship, you will have made at least 3 three attorney-client contacts and have at least one interview for you to do when you get back home. you learn how to get past the "gate-keeper". that alone is half the battle when you want to talk to the attorney.

as for issues like business cards, resume, your own personal website, etc..........the clnc instructor will assist you with this as well. bring samples of your marketing package for review.

i highly recommend this to any clnc who really desires to know how to market her/himself and have the experience of completing that first, crucial malpractice case. this goes into your marketing package, i might add. gives you that valuable first case to show your attorney/client when you have a face-to-face encounter and he/she wants to see a sample of a case that you have completed!!

I apologize for not responding quickly with this. I must have been out when these questions were posted. Sorry.

Yes, great questions. I became certified three years ago. Never started using this until in the past year or so. It takes great diligence, I will not sugar coat that. You MUST market yourself. Once you get your foot in the first door, it seems to just open up a whole world for you. Just that first case gives you powerful confidence.

It took me only 3 calls and one interview to have my first case. The first one was about 6 hours away and done all by phone, fax, email and snail mail. The next one came the day AFTER I finished the first one. Now, I have to subcontract to meet deadlines. I incorporated the business this year. I quit working fulltime NP duties last year. Still do that part time just to keep my hand in the clinicals. I teach as well. But, plenty of time to work on the medical legal consulting business. I am content with my career choice.

As for discounts, yes, Vickie does give these. No favoritism, however. Just to help you get your dream career jump started. Just look at the ad above these pages and call them........

the milazzo inst. course is just that, a course, not seminar or conference. it is fast paced and very intense for those 6 days. at the end, you will take the certification examination. if successful, you will be able to write clnc after your name. this course is great. i am very glad i finally decided to do it. i was certified 3 years ago and finally incorporated my own business this year.

vickie just tries to empower you with the desire to be successful. there are no get rich schemes involved. it is up to you to control your own fate and make it as a clnc.

yes, you can do this, too. please review my suggestions/responses on the other threads regarding the lnc.

your information is so valuable. i just completed the clnc certification and i am wondering if it would be worth it to do the 2 day apprenticeship, rather than the private apprenticeship? would either one be beneficial as the other? it is a very expensive few days.....

Great. I am so glad to meet another CLNC. So, you have heard regarding the exam?

I took the 6 day apprenticeship. Yes, it is quite steep, but, such valuable information you receive. Upon completion, you actually have completed a case and can use this in your marketing package. You receive first hand advice from a successful CLNC and you learn how to set up your office, do a case from review for merit, all contracts involved, just about anything you can think of. You go to court and observe a med mal case. See/hear a deposition, etc. You will leave from here with at least 1 interview with an attorney. I had 3 interviews set up before I left the apprenticeship.

If you take the 2 day course, it is marketing and how to write a case, but, you do not get to have a case for your packet. The expense is about the same, too. I know less time means less expense such as motels, food, air fare, etc.

The 6 day apprenticeship is only 6 students and 1 instructor. So, you receive 1 on 1 time. The 2 day is more than 100 students, so you would not have that 1 on 1 experience.
