I live in Syracuse, NY right now and want to do my last clinical in NYC (Manhattan/ Bronx area). Im afraid I cant afford to live in NYC until Im a RN. Any suggestions as to where I can live cheaper and commute to NYC for clinicals? I would only be going into the city once or twice a week.
Ive thought of NJ, but am not familiar with the cities or how it is like to live there. Is brooklyn cheaper and if so is it safe?
I have a degree in social work so I could work in that area during the semester or work as an LPN to pay the bills.
Also, how many of you out there got your first job where you did your last clinical in school?
Thanks!

Perfect timing! Get a copy of this weeks Advance For Nurses magazine. There is an entire section devoted to that very question - borough by borough comparisons for rents, cost of living, commuting, populatons, etc. Even includes info on some areas of NJ & the NY suburbs.

Where can I find that magazine?
Its a free magazine for nurses. You just sign up to have it mailed to you.
Go to http://www.advancefornurses.com
To get the last issue - the one that had the NYC living/working comparisons, email the New York/NJ editor at: [email protected]

They don't send print versions to Ohio, and that article is not online!
I have the current copy. The article is not in it. It must be the copy before last. I dont know how to get that one.

Texan, I live in NJ, work in NYC. YOu should check out Hoboken, NJ or Jersey City, NJ. Very easy commutes and Jersey City especially has lower rents.
