list- best states for pay?

Published

Awhile ago there was a list revolving on these boards that ranked all fifty states according to best pay rate per hour for RN's, taking into account cost of living. If I remember correctly, texas was number one but I can't seem to find the post anymore (darn, I knew I should have hit kudos! lol).

Does anyone have that list/know where to find it?

@OP, your reasons are yours- you owe no one any explanations. If you live by the golden rule, then you should be fine.

There certainly is nothing wrong with wanting to get the best possible out of your job, by jove, you should aim to do that. You never know who might need your help and also just for you.

It is a forum, people will post what they will, it is also your choice to choose to ignore such negativity, it helps you none.

LOL. Well, It would certainly seem that i've struck a nerve with my comment at the start of this forum about becoming a nurse for the right reasons. So, shall I explain myself more in depth??

I personally have nothing against a good paycheck. Yes, I do make a good salary as a nurse. But yes, I also VOLUNTEER as a nurse with a local community organization several hours a wk FOR FREE. Does that make me a better person than anyone else here, NO. But it means that I do try to keep my perspectives in order. I did not become a nurse b/c of the paycheck. I did not become a nurse because I have some saintlike quality about me. I became a nurse because I care about ppl in general. I hate to see suffering among humankind. To me, there is much sorrow in life. There are many ppl much less fortunate than I, and if I can help them just a little bit in life, then my life is better for it.

To the OP, I apologize for sounding if I was attacking you personally. That was my bad. I've just seen way too many young nurses come straight from nursing school into my unit not giving a D@#@ about the sick pts in my unit, and only caring about what they're gonna do with this wk's paycheck, and "how do these scrubs make my butt look?" lol...these nurses drive me crazy...and quite personally i wish they'd never joined nursing.

Again, I'm sorry if I lashed out at the OP. There is nothing at all wrong with wanting to earn a good salary. Nurses do HARD work, and do deserve much more than the majority make. However, please do keep the pay in perspective and become the type of nurse that you'd want taking care of your family members.

thank you for responding.

I understand your concerns. I also hope to become the type of nurse I'd want caring for my family members. I know what you are talking about...I was always surprised when I was a caregiver at the attitude of some of my coworkers. Don't get me wrong, some of them went above and beyond the call of duty, and their ethic and demeanor was inspiring. At the way other end of the spectrum were other people who were constantly looking for ways to get out of work and do simply the bare minimum. These are the people that often left me wondering, why did you, of all places, decide to work in healthcare? I mean really, aren't there less important jobs that you could have chosen to be lazy at!

I guess my theory is that money can't be the only motivation one has in becoming a nurse. At the eleventh hour into a grueling shift, when you are covered in various amounts of bodily fluids and are being pulled into twenty different directions by ten different people the thing that gets you through that last hour of work is NOT going to be the extra 20-35 dollars an hour. Usually, its an intrinsic desire to do something good for your patients.
