lincensure and nclex questions for all of you

I'm a pennsylavania resident who's looking to relocate to maryland when school is done. I don't know if PA has any reciprocity with maryland so i'm thinking of driving over to MD and taking the nclex. My director suggested its better to do that.

Unlike the state of PA, i've heard MD doesn't have temp lincenses for graduate nurses. Is it possible to work as a graduate nurse while waiting for my lincense?

Also, i want to take the nclex ASAP, how long does it take for the board of nursing to reply with the number to sit for the exam once you mail the forms? I've heard most of the states around PA tend to be notorious for slow processing times, jersey being the worst, followed by delaware. I'm just trying to figure out if MD falls within that "slow" group. If so, how slow are they?

Would you guys suggest i take the nclex in PA and then apply for a MD lincense afterwards? Will that take longer? or should i just drive over and take the exam in MD?

If there's anyone who knows how applying from a different state works, please share what you know with me.

You don't need to drive over and sit the exam as can be done in any state or country as long as the center does NCLEX. May be quick to sit exam for state you did your training as they are used to your school's transcripts and then endorse. Not sure how long it would take to endorse or even if apply to Maryland

thanks for the reply. i know i can take the nclex anywhere i want. The only thing is that some states have slow processing times. New jersey is only 5minutes across the bridge and yet, i wouldn't even think of working there because the BON takes forever to process stuff. My director suggested to a guy from california to go home and take the exam there since that's where he wants to work. She kinda hinted different states have different processing times and perhaps taking the nclex where you want to work is better. I'm trying to find out if sitting for the exam in MD would speed up the process compared to taking it in pennsylvania.

It's actually quicker to sit for the exam in PA because they get back to you in a week or two but if maryland is the same, i think taking the exam there wouldn' hurt.

Each BON does have a different processin time but if it is the same state that you trained in usually the process is quicker as they know your training

you can take the nclex in pennsylvania and either apply for licensure with the maryland board of nursing or you and apply for initial licensure from the pennsylvania board of nursing and then endorse you license to maryland. if you know that you are going to move to maryland when you complete school it might be best to obtain your initial licensure from maryland. the processing time required by the maryland board of nursing should be the same regardless of which way you proceed.

regardless of which state you seek licensure in, after your application to that states board of nursing is reviewed and approved, you will be issued an authorization to test (att). when you receive your att you schedule your test at any testing site convenient for you, without regard to which state the testing center is located in, and the results will be provide to the state in which you are going to be licensed.

it's going to be more costly, and possibly take longer, to obtain licensure in pennsylvania and then endorse your license to maryland. you are going to have the initial fee for you licensure in the state of pennsylvania. then, after you receive your pennsylvania license, you are going to pay the fee to maryland to endorse you license. if you want a 90 day temporary license from maryland then that is an additional fee. the pennsylvania board of nursing might also have a fee for completion of the licensure verification that maryland will require.

additionally, if you later decide to endorse your license to a third state they might require licensure verification from each state in which you have previously been licensed, although this might be changing with the advent of the nursing licensure compact.

Thanks very much for the replies. In PA, we need to send two checks to the BON if we want the temp lincense, that is one for the temp lincense and one for the real one. Is it the same for Maryland? i know i have to call the MD BON to get some stuff clarified. Anyone here know their number?
