Life-Span class is shortening mine.

I'm just whinning........certainly to a group of intellectuals that can somehow utilize this contradictory load of crap.

I'm certain this will be the only useless part of school, but I just can't get "up" for this.

I've been staring at it since early this morning. I can't see any content when I read it. It's like one of those pictures that you're supposed to look at and kind of let your eyes go out of focus and out pops a spaceship or some other such image that's not apparent by just looking at it. It's as if it's just someone talking about how thier day went or making casual conversation. When it does try to make a point, it only speculates, never settling on one thing, but presenting a range of possibilities.......all possibilities.

So they can never be wrong.....................how convienient.

I'm supposed to be writting a bibliography. I have to read and summarize ten papers.

I have to summarize speculation................beautiful.

Morons.:p

Did you seriously drop it?? I'm taking the class right now too and it bores the crap outta me. It's all I can do not to end up in the corner in the fetal position humming to myself....my midterm is on monday, guess I should start reading

Ha! That is the shorter version of what I wrote Kelligrl!

Yup, I really did drop it......twice. This time it was a withdrawl with no refund. I still don't understand what it is about it that material that would make it interesting or give it any validity in my world. These are not facts that they want us to learn about a life-span, but rather barely plausible assumptions.

I put off dropping the program until monday because I wanted to think about the implications of trying to complete a class that I've had to drop twice, and what I might do to improve.

I am not a poor student. I have a 4.0 GPA and have just eaten all my other classes for lunch. This is the first class where I feel like it's spoken in a foreign language. I don't fit the mold at all if I am expected to not only believe this stuff, but use it somehow in practice.

If that is a nurse, then that is not me,however, in 5 years working with nurses on patient care floors in several care settings and conducting conversation and sharing work, I don't once remember these theories or having consideration of any of these life-span ideas being either discussed or put into practice.

Then why is it required and used later in clinicals if it has very little use to me? Maybe it's required because there are students that enjoy it and will gladly pay the tuition fees to participate.

I just can't get interested to do it and it's no where near as real as chemistry, anatomy, or math to nursing practice so it's really very difficult to get excited about.

You see, If I need to apply this to be an effective nurse then I will think that the entire profession is just as "abstract" and for all my knowledge I will be quite usless as a nurse.

It's not that I don't understand what I'm reading, it's that I do not BELIEVE what I'm reading and therefore I do not believe nursing is very valid if this is an important part of it that I see as speculation by non-scientists.

The requirement of any more than a basic psychology class is holding back the profession's growth and prestige.

BTW Kelligrl,

Don't be alarmed. You are experiencing nothing more than a Anti-Psychological Protective Trance. It will pass, but am sorry to report that the emotional psychopathology(you are nuts) may be with you for the rest of your natural life.

Peeps--

Believe me, I share your disdain of Lifespan...it's really all I can do to keep my eyes open while reading the book. Fortunately, though, I'm taking the class through Northern VA Comm College, which offers it as an ELI (distance learning) course. No lectures; just 3 multiple choice exams and a few short papers...definitely much more tolerable. Better yet, I just took the first exam a few days ago and 45 of the 50 questions were directly from the study guide :) Since you're relatively nearby, you may want to look into it....you can probably even take the exams at your own community college's testing center...

Kardut,

Thanks for the lead. I think I'll do a Google on that one. I'm looking at doing it during clinicals or giving up my seat. I can't believe that I'm so good at everything else and I just SUCK at this!!

The fetal position is loosening a litte with that one, thanks.

Freud(the guy with the couch for everyone to lay on) came up with a strange set of theories. Coming from another guy, I'm very proud of him to have the guts to tell ANYBODY this stuff! What it boils down to is that he was apparently just horny.

You might read a book called, "The Fallacy of Freud," written sometime way back in the 80's for a different spin on this "Father of Psychology" story...

:roll

LMAO Peeps...Seriously, I have to say that I'm right there with you on your theories of Freud and Pavlov...poor d**n dogs. I think you can be an effective nurse even if you don't buy into all of it....Just find a really short class, take in what they want you to, and spew it back on their tests. That's what I'm doing. Well, that's what I'll be doing when I actually read the book, still haven't started. :chuckle Don't give up your seat in clinical, not over that class.

I'm calming down now Kelligrl.

I got to go practice golf today and my attitude was quite invincible. I was there for hours but the time seemed like about fifteen minutes. I was hitting my driver off the deck without disturbing the grass perfectly with that WHOOOOP sound that the club is supposed to make when it cuts the air just right, on plane without effort..........................................................................That's my favorite protective trance.:eek

I got a letter today that congratulated me on making the Dean's list, and that just reminded me of the hard work that I've put into this and how far I have to go.

It's sad, but I can't have a perfect grade point forever no matter what I do. There will be some instructor that doesn't like me or some dexterity thing that I can't do well or whatever.

Who knows, maybe life-span is the only thing that I won't just love about nursing:kiss

Hey...there's always the Seinior PGA Tour waiting for me to take a swing at it:)

Sleepyeyes,

I will take a look at that the next time i'm at Borders.....thanks.

What's it about? Was he really a perverted wacko or something?

I know that Erikson was just an artist with an opinnion who trained under Fraud........uhm, Freud, but I never looked any further.

Well we still didn't have to take a course with any of those names...thank goodness! Just another class to add to the long list of classes that I'd never remember much about anyways.

Thanks...

Forevermom,

You don't know how lucky you are.

It's a 200 level course where I'm attending.:sniff:

The gist of it was that he was treating his boss's 14yo daughter, who was an hysteric.

Use your imagination.... :stone:

Another interesting idea shared by the culture of the day, was that the nose was the seat of sexual function. So he had a bud that did "nose jobs." :chuckle

I was only terribly disappointed that this book didn't get more attention. I grew up as one of the generation of women who were accused of "member envy," and psychologically attacked with his syllogistic symbolistic crap.

(But..... I have since been thoroughly vindicated, and have made my peace with psychology.... I just stay the heck away from it.... :lol2: )
