Liability Insurance for Nurses

Published

Hello everyone! I am beginning my RN career next month! :roll

It is a really exciting time for me to finally realize my dream. Due to our litigious society, I would feel more comfortable with some sort of "malpractice" or "liability" insurance in place. Do any of you carry this? If so, where does one obtain it? About how much should I expect to spend? Thank you so much!

Take care and God Bless,

Renee;)

I have nurses' liability (which is really personal ) with state farm. it is a rider to my homeowner's insurance, and i think only costs me another 17 bucks for 500,000 worth of coverage. well worth it, whatever the cost. try to get the highest amount you can for coverage; i wanted a million but they dont go that high. ALWAYS carry your own coverage.

Thanks Jas honey! I called my homeowner's insurance company (Allstate) and told them about what you do. Of course, they can't do it that way. I was told that I would have to get a general liability policy and it would cost me about $600 a year. I know that I can get it a lot cheaper elsewhere.

hi renee! i'm renee, too! as for the insurance coverage as a nurse, yes, buy all you can...you never know when you might need it, especially in lieu of what is going on in the world of hospital nursing today. i always had my own insurance through nso. it's affordable, and although i never needed it, i might have. never depend on the insurance of the place you work to cover your azz in case of a lawsuit against you by a patient. the hospital will protect their own azz always and foremost, and it is completely your responsibility to look out for number one - that would be you! :)

For another take on the malpractice issue, check out this article I've written:

If you subscribe to any of the nursing mags.....'Nursing2002'...'RN"...you will find advertisements for some there. Mine is through NSO...have been for a number of years. Wouldn't be without it. I wouldn't rely on my homeowners policy to help either. At least with NSO, they deal with Nursing issues and I feel more comfortable with them.

We have State Farm too, but I sure wouldn't feel safe with them regarding a medical/nursing legal issue......

that's just me.
