LGBT Nurses

Published

This topic may have been brought up before, but I'm simply curious to see if other AN members are part of the LGBT community and how that has impacted your nursing career (if at all). As a transgender nurse I can say it does help me the couple of times I have cared for transgender patients, and sometimes I can educate my colleagues.

I am a gay male nurse and my sexual orientation hasn't impacted my career, and I am "out" to my coworkers. I'm good friends with most of the unit and occasionally a physician or another nurse will ask me about gay dating and such, etc. Everyone has been respectful in my experience.

You've got to be kidding? I guess my hopes are dashed. ?

I am happy to say as a female nurse with a female partner I have never experienced discrimination at my hospital. I am the only lesbian that I know of other than one woman who works in staffing but we do have a lot of gay male nurses. I have many friends at work and feel respected and for this I am super grateful.

I don’t usually discuss my sexuality with patients unless I become particularly close with them. They are usually surprised to learn I am gay (maybe because I look feminine, not really sure) but I have never had a bad reaction... not even from little old patients from conservative countries! I think when people learn you are gay after you took good care of them it may change their perspective if they were previously prejudiced... not sure but I hope so!
