2 level lumbar fusion

Hello,

I will be having a fusion on 2/16/06 and would like any advice you can give on pain control for this. my surgeon has said that he will give me intraspinal morphine analgesia that last not quite 24 hours and then oral meds. Does the spinal fluid morphine work well? I am afraid this will not do it. Should I ask for a epidural instead ? I am meeting with him again to discuss this plan and to revise it. I get very sick from iv morphine. I puke my guts out every time it releases. I was thinking maybe a Demerol pca pump. What do you think? Oh yah, my surgery will be from the back approach and not abdomen. He told me that the morphine through the spine will not usually make people vomit but sometimes makes them itch. Is there a way to control vomiting and treat the severe pain? Thanks so much for your time and input. I'm very scared of this surgery and feel I need some type of pain plan to get through this. Thanks again Sheri

It seems you physician has thought out your plan of care quite carefully. Voice your concerns to him and ask any questions that are bothering you. Make sure you ask for anti constipation med. That seems to be the biggest problem for most spineys.

We aren't in a position to give you medical advice, however, I echo PRN's recommendation to discuss any concerns with your physician/surgeon who know your condition best.
