Let the job hunt begin - new grad!

I am not sure if I am posting in the right forum.

Hello All!

I just wanna say I DID IT! I passed and now I am a NURSE! I am so excited! I had a few questions.

1. My first question is, did you apply for jobs even if the minimum requirement listed at least one year of experience. I am looking all over the net (most facilities list jobs on-line)and this is what I am coming across and I am somewhat deflated.

What did you do? Am I restricted to applying to just "new grad" positions?

2. I am scared super scared. Of course I am excited, but I am more scared. Please tell me you guys felt this way as a new nurse as well.

3. If you have a report sheet that you absolutely love, will you please email me a copy if you have one. [email protected] I had one from my school, but I am not a fan.

TIA,

Emma

The rule of thumb is apply for any position that you can fulfill 75 % of the requirements.

Do you have any additional care giving experience? Even providing home care for a family member..

or volunteer experience should be added to your resume.

You MUST not appear to be " super scared".

Confidence will get you in the door.

Good luck. PM me.. I have had 15 interviews... 12 offers.

I just graduated in December and started a position in Mobile Unit Critical Care at a large hospital here (working in ER, ICU, IMCU, NICU, and Tele).

If you have ANY connections - use them. I've worked for the hospital for 3-4 years as a Unit Coordinator on another floor and it was probably what got me into the position. Talk to preceptors, or clinical areas, etc. Call managers of floor's you've had clinicals on and see if they have anything open.

Yes - apply for positions that say 1 year of experience. The managers sometimes like to take new nurses because they are "moldable" and have brilliant fresh minds.

Beenthere, done that: Please share how you managed to have 15 interviews! I graduate in May and I have started applying to positions within the past few weeks. I haven't heard anything yet, but I'm hoping eventually. I'm in the Philly area, but I'm not limiting my search and am willing to relocate

1. My first question is, did you apply for jobs even if the minimum requirement listed at least one year of experience.

YES. All the job listings in my area required or preferred one year plus. So, I still applied and it worked out.

2. I am scared super scared. Of course I am excited, but I am more scared. Please tell me you guys felt this way as a new nurse as well.

THAT'S NORMAL, with experience comes confidence. But, don't ever let them see that you're feeling that way.

3. If you have a report sheet that you absolutely love, will you please email me a copy if you have one. [email protected] I had one from my school, but I am not a fan.

Will do.

Specializes in Acute Care Pediatrics.

Good luck on your job search!
