Length of master's NP question

Published

I have applied to a reputable masters NP program which is a full time 3 year online program. Locally there is also a full time 3 year DNP program at higher cost. I keep reading on blogs about how other NPs got their degree in 2 years. I want to be well prepared. But I'm wondering if I have not chosen well. Thoughts? recommendations for quality 2 year online programs? At this time I can't really justify the extra cost of a DNP.

If you're happy with the quality of the program, the relatively short term investment of one year is probably a better option than looking for a 2-year program that may not provide the level of training that you're expecting in your program. There's a wide variety of opinions on the on-line NP program quality, I hope you find one that will work best for you. Good luck!

My program is hybrid. We spend 4 days a month [8 hours each day] for lectures and work is submitted online. I'm okay with that. Its 2 years length and I will be in school for all the summers for theprogram. The program is through a local university in the bay area so the employers are familiar with the students of that school. I'm happy with my choice and I feel two years would be enough. I rather finish early.

I'm 50 so I'd rather skip the fluff. If anyone knows of a reputable 2 year program online I'd love to hear about it!

Are you a RN already? Most full-time master's NP programs are 2 years. Unfortunately, fluff is part of the NP curriculum and difficult to avoid. Online NP programs will likely require that you find your own preceptors, which can be a significant obstacle.

In my opinion, two years is not enough--not with the kind of responsibility NPs are expected to have.
