Anyone else out there facing a potential layoff? Management has asked staff at my facility to volunteer to reduce FTEs before being forced to do so, with the possibility of layoffs in the future.
I always assumed a career in nursing would be secure. Looks like I was mistaken!
Nothing as of yet where I work. We are very busy and no word on reducing staff. We have a good MediCal contract with the state to take care of all of the indigents and illegals, so these people don't have to worry about taking time off of work for surgery. I work at another facility PT in the am's for lunches and breaks and they are always calling me to come in. It is going to be very hard in certain parts of the country especially in the auto industry. New grads and those with very little experience or little senority will be the first to go. LVNs are a thing of the past for us, we haven't hired any for over 5 years. Luckily I have a lot of experience and reside at the top of the senority heap. Good luck to everyone. Also this is my 1000 post!
My position was "eliminated" effective Wednesday. Back to the drawing board. Praise God I have been a nurse for 11 years and have hospital, home care and long term care experience. Maybe that will help me get a job. Maybe I'll go back to being a nurses aide, I didn't ever lose my job as an aide!
Putmetosleep, I am also in Minnesota, at a facility who asked staff to voluntarily reduce FTE... maybe we are at the same hospital? I am a little nervous about what may be to come, particularly since I am a recent hire. It's a scary thought to realize my job is not much more secure than those in other industries. I'm trying my best to stay positive, but the idea of a layoff has been hanging over my head.
When I worked in Duluth Mn, back in the late 80's the hospital first initiated voluntary reduction of fte's, within 6 months, black friday as we called it came. Pink slips were handed out. Those of us who were not pink slipped. Were informed we would in essence be reapplying for our positions as due to union rules and senority, nurses could bump into other positions when theirs had been eliminated. I have not ever forgotten those times. I was lucky , I was still able to work on my same unit, abet on a different weekend as a more senior lpn from another unit took my original spot.
Good luck to all of us still working in this country. May better times come in the future for all.
