Law enforcement to nursing

Nurses Men

Published

I'm thinking about a career change. Is there anyone here that has changed careers from law enforcement to nursing? If so, can you shed some light on the transition, what to expect? I've got a B.S. in C.J..

Thanks

I'm gonna try the switch.

Help a wanna-be out here... 'DST' is that as in Diagnostic Sonography? And if so, what is prompting the switch?

Injury forced....DST is short for Deputy sheriff trainee

I'm sorry to hear of your injuries, I can sure empathize with you. Two back surgeries and three ruptured disks ended my days of leaping tall buildings with a single bound... they too put me out to pasture kicking and screaming.

Good luck to you!

Ya I'll need al the luck I can get. When you get the golden hand shake in the only job you ever prepared for and now have to go back out into the world and find a new one, man it sucks. All my aunts are nurses and my lil brother whos account this was, is a R.T., so I have lots of help but unlike all of them, this wasn't my first choice. I just hope I like it as much as I think I will!!!!!!!

Ah the few the proud the injured cop! I was on for 6 years befor taking a 9mm in the back of my hand. (och!) After 2 surgeries lasting a total of 10 hours and 2 1/2 years of OT. They showed me the door and yes I was kicking and screaming the whole way. I even taught my self how to shoot with the other hand. They told me I was a liability. SO I bounced around for a few years then decided to go back to school. I am in nursing school now and it is going good. I find that there are a lot of similarities ecspecially the E.R. I would go back to police work in a second if they would let me but I think nurseing is going to be a good alternitive! And Yes I am a **** poor speller but I am carring an A in nursing so I figure it just another trade off:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I hear ya' buddy! I miss being on the job more than I miss having a body in one piece.

Good work on your success in school! I'm 52, but have still been able to maintain my #3 spot in a class of 125. I think that our attraction to this line of work is that it so closely resembles "hook'n and book'n"... a very real opportunity to help others, AND that occasional adrenalin rush to keep it interesting!

Well Im happy to see that there will be some of the boys in blue roaming the halls of a hospital with me! Its always good to have friendlies in a hostile environment (all of those women nurses. LOL). From what I have seen and heard so far it seems that the ER is the place for a retired flatfoot. The people you encounter there seem to be the same people you see on the streets usually not at thier best moments!!!!!

Too funny!!

Thread bump.

Checking in.

Hello fellas.

8 yrs LE, another disability retired one here. The boredom/lack of excitement is killing me. Starting nursing school in August; can't wait to get back to work, be of service, and feel valuable again.

Specializes in CDI Supervisor; Formerly NICU.

Good luck to you!

Specializes in ER.

A coworker of mine who had Psych experience landed a job yrs ago with a Southern Calif PD. He rode along with patrol officers to help deal with psych patients they encounter on the street. Im sure its more involved than that but I'm just throwing it out there to former officers missing being out there to check with depts near you.
