Pilot, I just want to commend you for even considering nursing at your age. Im sure most of your peers are not too accepting about your career choice at least that is how it was during my high school days and Im sure its not any different. I started nursing in my mid 30s and wish I 'd done it in my early 20s so I could've taken advantage of travel nursing before having a family. Nursing is not easy but the opportunities in nursing are endless. Do not let "working with "******" female nurses because there are guys who are like that too called "a^%h)^#. Every job has them and as you mature in life you will be able to deal with those type of people......I was just curious how you decided on nursing, do you have family, friends in the field or they do have career classes in your school encouraging nursing as career field?.

Started in "adult" ER as new grad but prior to becoming a RN, I was an tech at a Childrens Hospital trauma center. My first choice was ER new grad at that Childrens Hospital but they didn't have one. After 1 yr at the "adult" ER, I got hired on in the ER at Childrens Hospital. So I had the best of both worlds. I'm assuming you are getting an "adult" ER job. I think you shouldn't have a problem as long as you understand that you will be taking care of heavier pts, bigger poo and drug seeker in "adult" ER. Most "adult" ER nurses would rather not be assigned to a pediatric pt and its same for pediatric ER nurses about an adult pt walking in their ER with chest pain. So they will love you and be more than happy to pass on their ped pts. I say go for it, its a plus having both experiences.

It appears that cop to RN is fairly common. To the former police officers......I was just curious to know what motivated you into nursing as a 2nd career ie......prior medical experience (military medic) or was it recommended by your HR, $$ etc.

Murse is a first for me...........Im not offended, I actually got a good laugh when I saw that word but I guess it depends on who's calling me that and what mood I'm in...............guess I will have to wait and see. These days I dont care what they call me cause Im not looking for work unlike some of my buddies who made fun of me for going into the mursing profession 9yrs ago.......who's laughing now.

Im not sure what you mean about double minority,........yes I have worked with many gay nurses male/female and every one I have worked with were excellent nurses...ok maybe except for one, he was just annoying because he complained all the time about his work and how he wish he went into flight attending instead..........but of course being gay has nothing to do with being a good or a bad nurse. Whatever you do, Im sure you'll do fine

ER X 7YRS, TELEMEDICINE X 6YRS............would like to go into O.R. which was my first choice in nursing school. That's whats so great about nursing, options.

A coworker of mine who had Psych experience landed a job yrs ago with a Southern Calif PD. He rode along with patrol officers to help deal with psych patients they encounter on the street. Im sure its more involved than that but I'm just throwing it out there to former officers missing being out there to check with depts near you.

I've never been asked if I wanted to become a doctor. I would sometimes get asked, when I meet a pt for the first time. if I was the x-ray guy, lab guy or the EVS guy there to mop up the emesis on the floor. I dont get offended cause it makes me chuckle. So if I ever get in trouble I can always say it was the xray or lab guy who did it.

Mike F. described exactly why a nursing classmate and friend of mine went from Paramedic to RN profession. In addition my buddy wanted to become a flight nurse, travel and opportunity to make more $$

I say go for it and forget the stereotype. I have been a male all my life and "male" nurse for 8 years (sorry just a lil male nurse humor) and it has been the best career move i've ever made. Wish I would of went into the field at your age, then I could of done traveling nursing, what a great way to travel around the world and get paid for it. I'll have to wait until my kids are out on there own, and I can take my wife along. Remeber there are lots of attractive female/male (whatever ur preference) your age going into the profession. While I was in nursing school I got my share of male nurse comments or jokes from coworkers and even family members saying that it wasn't " the manly thing to do" but thats a bunch of b%$^^^^t. I got the last laugh. Would you believe 3 of those coworkers are now trying to get there RN. Im not saying nursing is easy but you can progress in the field and do some exciting things......I landed an ER new grad job. With my ER experience I landed a job and travel with the medical team that follows the pro supercross races throughout the US. I have a buddy who switch over from the Paramedic/Firefighting side and now is a flight nurse transporting patients all over the world. Due to cutbacks, you may not get that ER job you want right away but thats ok cause you will get there eventually and who knows you may end up hating ER and do OB or OR (my second choice). Goodluck.

thanks everyone for the great feedback......i will check out iphone. I am seeing more units restricting pda, especially ones with camera phones for good reason I guess. PDAs are great especially if you work registry because they allow me to retrieve info like code for med rooms, common procedures that are unique to that facility....etc. I was wondering if could sync all my PDA information (address, memo, dates) from my ol Sony Clie PDA to the Iphone?
