This week I give my finals and bid my adieu! I always loved teaching, but I hate the atmosphere of the educational realm. After teaching for four years I am done! Tired of being treated unprofessionally by people who have even lower degrees than me! Tired of being treated like I need to be told how to do stuff and be harassed everyday....If you have seen the movie Office Space and the bit about the TPS reports you will know exactly what I mean. They do not realize how independent nursing is for us. We are not used to be harassed and talked down to like we are stupid. (I don't mean the patients LOL). Tired of the students who feel entitled to "A" and free passes. Thank goodness I am halfway done with my FNP post master's degree! SO I am going to focus on school and wish any luck that goes into the realm of education! Underpaid, overworked (salary) and defiantly under-appreciated (your the scapegoat for the school's problems). I won't even talk about the middle school level gossiping and back-stabbing that goes on!
Ok I feel better............

Thre is a joke about the 3 most toxic places in the world, Church offices, nurses stations, and teachers lounges. Nursing academia combines 2 of those.
I was fortunate and had worked in academia enough that I knew better than to head there. I stick to clinical education. I still keep part time Associate affiliate clinical faculty position, ( the part time bottom of the heap) but I won't do it full time.
Spoon feeding, up grading, writing off test questions, cutting them "slack" on being prepared for class becaue they were busy. I will say that this isn't a nursing specific thing. I teach clinical skills to PA students, Pharm D students and a few other specialty areas. They are dealing with the same thing.
Good luck on your FNP, I'm keeping that as an option too.

Best wishes! I'm new to being an academic nurse educator- so I'm saying good riddance to something else! Nursing really does have something for everyone, and there is always something new to try before we get burned out.

And I had envisioned nurse educator as the capstone of my working life. Sigh.
