Hello Every One!
I've been on this site for quite some time now while trying to find a Registered Nursing program that suits my needs academically as well as financially. I've gone to several websites and visited quite a few campuses in South Florida to include: City College, Keiser, Nova, Miami Dade College, Broward College, FAU, Palm Beach State College, Florida National College as well as Brown Mackie (there are a few more that I can't remember right now lol) . Most recently I have made contact with Larkin Community Hospital in South Miami, Florida. I found out that Larkin Community Hospital has a nursing program while browsing the State of Florida's Department of Health website: www.doh.state.fl.us/ . (This is a good place to check if you want to know if a school is approved by the state of Florida and is accredited or not, and they also include the pass rates...) Any who, I decided to check out Larkin Hospital and here is what I found out:
Larkin Hospital is a "teaching hospital" and they have several residency programs set up for Allopathic medicine, and Osteopathic medicine, in connection with Nova University... they are also designated as a "Area of Critcal Need Facility" & "Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) facility". These things can be good for new nurses (Im thinking that it is at least) or nursing professionals in general since the government offers to pay your student loans back etc for working at these types of facilities for 2-4 years... Basically I spoke with the personnel there and their 1st nursing program is going to start on September 4, 2012.
The school costs a whopping $42,000 for the Associate of Science in Nursing and requires the student to pay $1000.00 down payment & there is currently no financial aid or student loans ( so there will be monthly payments)- however I was told that this cost includes your books, supplies and uniforms! Also for acceptance the TABE test is needed and a $50 application fee, and as of right now school hours are Monday- Friday 5pm-9pm for 20 months. I wanted to make contact with anyone who has more information or better "inside" info about this school /hospital... Im hoping to find additional people with information or who are enrolled to attend ? Also if I can make friends with hopeful students that would be great as well. Thank you all in advance for reading and sharing!
Hello, I am currently attending Palm Beach State College in Lake Worth, Florida doing my prerequisites. I am relocating down to the Broward County area and am looking into the possibility of applying to Broward College's Nursing program. I have been reading some negative reviews regarding their program (Central campus in particular). I think the idea of attending school through a hospital is ideal! I was wondering how it went for your at Larkin? Was it all you hoped it would be? Did they hire you after you received your RN?

Hi- Yes so far so good. Its just the school is still new and they are working out some kinks... more like trying to get a set schedule for all the terms.. Their teaching staff is highly qualified as you must have a MSN or above to teach the lectures. All tests are via computer- and the clinical rotations are done at the hospital , except for Pediatrics and OB/GYN.. since Larkin doesn't have those specialties in-house. Your tuition is $200 monthly and that included books and a uniform. Make sure you choose wisely, cuz the drive is getting to me, however I'm excited that I will graduate as a RN August 2015. Sorry I haven't logged on in a while been busy studying... Nursing school is seriously sleep depriving. Forget about me complaining about a social life, that's the least of my worries. You will have a test weekly each class, Nursing math has 1 final exam that you should make it your business to pass the 1st time. They also give you a remedial attempt for that... thank GOD I passed on the 1st try, because I am not fond of math. Gain good study habits, put yourself on a reasonable schedule, and DO NOT FALL BEHIND... However Palm Beach State has a part time nursing program that I would have chosen if I didn't enroll here... just wasn't fond of the waiting and application process at Palm Beach. Good luck, anything else just ask.
Hey TJ1008!Im so happy you came across my post. Im excited to have found someone interested in this program as well... I would love to be friends/ classmates! Have you taken your TABE test yet? Im terrible with math and I think I've forgotten alot of the steps that come with the math problems etc.. When do you plan to start?
Hello, i attended an open house today at larkin (10/11/14) i loved the vibe that i got there so i decided to do a little internet searching and came across this post. Did you ever start attending and if so how was or is your experience there? Hope to get a reply soon :)
Hello! I know this is an old post but i just recently got accepted into the program and i will be starting January of 2015. I wanted to know your thoughts about the school and also im aware that it is not accredited but do you know if it will be soon? I want to continue my studies and one day become a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner but attending a non accredited school would make that rather difficult. If you can please give me any insight or advice on the school i would really appreciate it! Thank you so much :)
Hi.. sorry this is really late.. don't come on here too often since school started... There's no financial aid yet- so either you will pay $200 monthly or get the health program student loan.. classes begin 5 or 530 pm and clinicals will be on the weekends , and in the beginning you'll go to clinicals during the week anything else lemme know.
Hi Michelle.. Yes Accreditation is something definitely to consider- Larkin is now undergoing the accreditation process and their first visit with the board will be in maybe 2 months. Hopefully they will be done with the accreditation process by the end of the year... im hoping sooner for my sake good luck.
Hello I'm trying to get in the larking program like you did . I just wanted advice please if you could email me back [email protected]
Stay away!!!!! This is the worst nursing school ever!!! Please do you research . They do not have the accreditation , the teacher don't give a crap about you learning or not especially the fundamentals teacher you will only pass these classes if you cheat your way , the administration want you to fail so you could keep giving them money. I was there for two semester I did not continue because the teacher did not like so she gave all the other students the test but me. There not accredited because the people that are teaching there don't give a **** about you they only go there to make a quick buck. They sound good in paper but in reality there not supper disorganized supper over expensive for and associates.. do not take my word ask your self to the student that are there.
Hello,
Im looking for any updates from students/graduates with this schools RN program. They tell me their accredited but I see they are due for an initial accreditation site visit in 2024 and don't have a NCLEX program code. Anyone graduate here and was able to sit for the exam? The schedule is great but I'm not interested in paying hard earned money for nothing. They seem to be really nice and helpful but I never see marketing for the school and theres no accreditation yet just candidacy. Any information from graduates or current students is highly appreciated. Thank you!!
