Hey All,
I'd like suggestions or tips on buying a laptop for school! I'm considering applying for an online RN-BSN program and want to make sure I have a laptop that can handle online nursing curicculum! Does anyone have any tips or advice?
Thank you so much, in advance!

Well, I'll admit it, I'm an Apple girl. My Macbook has lasted as long as the last 3 other branded laptops I've had put together (Dell, HP) and is still going very strong. I had no issues with it during my online MSN.

Check with the school you want to attend. some specify mac or PC.
Thank you! I had a Macbook that didn't fare well but I think at the time it was on its last leg.....
This is a good idea, thx!

I just finished an online RN-BSN program. I bought the cheapest laptop at target. I would think most software/hardware requirements are minimum. I think it's standard but make sure to buy one with a webcam in case you need to take proctored examinations. If not, webcams aren't all that expensive anyway. Be sure and have a good word processor and PERRLA to help with formatting.
Personally, I only use mine when I'm on the road. I never could adjust to the feel of the keyboard on a laptop.
Thanks! This is really helpful. Mind if I ask what program you completed? Did you also work? I work full time, Mon-Thur and am a single parent. Now that my son's older, my evenings are a bit freer but I still can't be completely absorbed... Just curious how others are doing this RN-BSN thing...
Thanks!!

Check with the program in order to see minimum software and hardware requirements and work from there. Some programs have specific course or testing software they use and you need a machine capable of running it. (E.g. my school uses an exam software for almost all exams - and it is completely incompatible with some apple products).
Mind if I ask what program you completed?
I did a RN-BSN program online at SWOSU out of Weathorford, OK. For me, it was just a bunch of reading, research, and paper writing. I had to take a few other classes like cultural geography, another stats class, algebra etc. I took my sweet time completing the program. At max I only take 2 classes a semester. I have 3 jobs, wife and 3 kids, but my wife has always been very supportive of my education. She's also a RN.
Depending on what your goals are... do you want to finish fast? Or are you a turtle like me? Going slow and steady was best for my lifestyle. I don't need the stress, worry about crunch time and all that. I like to have some flexibility if one of my PRN's asks me to work. Plus, there really was no benefit for me to finish fast as my employer won't give a raise for earning the BSN.
If you do buy a laptop and if you spend most of your time using it be sure and get one with a comfortable keyboard. You'll be writing, a lot.

It may also be a good idea to check with your tax preparer.... the cost of equipment & software needed for your RN-BSN education may be deductible because it is for career advancement. This is usually a slam dunk for nurses who are working for those "BSN Preferred" employers. Keep all those receipts.

I've been using my macbook pro for about 7 years now (knock on wood). No complaints here.

I have had macs that lasted awhile vs. a Dell or HP which kicked the bucket rather quickly. But maybe I'm biased, I also have an iPhone.
