Before I started school I had questions about needing a laptop or a pda and what was important?

So I got a laptop and I used it all year, everyday. I wanted a dell and I got all the goodies stuff. its the inspiron 8500, theres an 8600 now I think.

anyway. today I was thinking. Its huge, too big and bulky really.

In hindsight I would have gotten somthing smaller.

havn't gotten the pda yet but will soon to help keep stats in clinical.

It is easy to transfer files from a PC to a Mac, provided you have the correct applications programs. I transfer Power Point and word files all of the time through email or on a CD (which I easily burn on my Mac). There are several programs that you can purchase--Virtual PC is one. My best advise is to go to and you will get great information.

I am setting up a new business totally on my 12" Powerbook. It goes with me to the OR, the office, meetings with my attorney and accountant.

Hey guys - I just got a Sony Vaio TR3 - the one that is 10.1 inches - 3.1 pounds, wireless, built-in camera and whew - I love it!!! Going to St. Louis this weekend and then to St. Thomas next week so am really glad I got something small. (I'm in an online MSN program!!!)

What is so fabulous about an Apple computer (that's a MAC, right) versus something like a Dell? In layman's terms please...

What is so fabulous about an Apple computer (that's a MAC, right) versus something like a Dell? In layman's terms please...

What is so fabulous about an Apple computer (that's a MAC, right) versus something like a Dell? In layman's terms please...

Where do we start? (and this from a long-time "pee-cee" user myself)

- ease of use (no "computer tech" skills required here)

- reliability of both hardware and operating system (near-bullet-proof OS)

- pretty much impervious to viruses

- cross-platform friendly - you can do just about anything with a Mac (powerbook, i-book, etc.) that you can with a PC including exchanging files from Word, Powerpoint, etc. If you have PC specific software (not available for Mac) you can purchase Virtual PC software and run just about ANY pc software on the Mac. Sort of the "all-in-one" computer stop here - think Swiss knife practicality. ;-)

They TEND... to be very reliable over long periods of time. I mentioned that above sort of, but the truth is these machines tend to remain useful for far longer than the average pc.

I still use PCs, I want to mention. I just prefer Macs. They are simple, smart, sleek, and reliable. If you look at portables (like I am shopping right now), they are very powerful for what you are paying. I would encourage you to get the "AppleCare" warranty for any notebook as I think it's smart, especially if you are new to Macs. They are a little "pricey" when compared to "bargain basement" PC notebooks, but you are not comparing apples to apples when comparing the two. :)

Best advice - walk into an Apple Retailer if available in your area. The CrapUSA (Comp) & other brick & mortors aren't always the best to show you what these machines can do. If nothing else, like Yoga said - check out http://www.apple.com and start reading. The only PC notebooks I think come close to Apple's are a few of the Vaios, Fujitsus and Sagers - http://www.sagernotebook.com/index.html (veerrrrry nice notebooks!).
