Laptop for grad school

Hello again. :) Just wanted to see how many of you in grad school purchased lap tops and which types you have and if you think they are sufficient. I'm starting classes this week & am thinking of buying one online. I'm planning on also getting microsoft office to have word and powerpoint. Do you think there are other software packages that you think are also essential to purchase for grad school papers, projects, etc? Any tips you guys may have would be greatly appreciated. Check and see if your University offers software discounts to students or has site licenses. For example, all enrolled students at my University can purchase MS Office for $10 (including Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher, and Access). Doctoral students can get SPSS for about $150 (normally over $1,000).

Lastly, see if your school provides certain computer requirements or offers new student discounts. Over 1,000 new UVa students order a computer system before they start their undergrad or grad program each year, and the college Bookstore places mass orders with substantial discounts for new students every summer.
