Langara College, Vancouver: Nursing Students

World Canada CA Programs

Published

hi,

i got accepted into the sept 2007 program. how many of you are nursing students or pre nursing students in langara? and those who graduated or are current students - any tips on the courses, professors, practicum, books, tuition etc.?

come out, come out, wherever u are! :D

Hey Ian,

I heard that the clinicals are usually 6:30-3:30pm on monday-wednesday. I believe they start in term 2, term 1 is just some hospital tours. Also it depends which hospital your placement is at. I have a buddy in term 5, and his tuesdays and wednesday clinicals run until 10pm at night.

Did you hand in your langara criminal check form yet ?

Cheers !

Enoch

Yea I handed in the form a few weeks ago.

Hey everyone,

I have a question, regarding NURS 1100. I've been told that the clinical practice for this course is in the morning on Tues or wed. Is that outside of lecture time? On Langara website, the info is displayed like this :

**********S, *** W, ***** S Lab --W---- 1330-1520 A369

******* L, ***** M, *** W,

Is T 8:30 - 12:20 considered the clinical practice time? OR is there an additional time for clinical (either on T or W morning)? I know that for 1141, it tells you specifically that there is a segment scheduled for PRAC. But it doesn't seem so here..

Thanks!

Ian

Clinical days can start at 6:30 but some placements your instructor will say be there by 6:45 or 6:55. They want you to be present for morning report which happens most times at 0700. In addition, there is usually a class associated with clinical, skills in the lab or theory. As was mentioned by another poster you don't really do any clinical days. In term one you just do a hospital visit, a half day spent shadowing a student in a higher term (2, 3 or 4 I think), and a day spent shadowing a nurse. My shadow visit was at the Cancer Clinic. Term 2 is long term care, term 3 is medical, term 4 is surgical and term 5 is consolidated practice experience I which I think is just medical, but I might be wrong. I don't remember hearing about any surgical placements that term.

is pathophysiology really hard ?

which teachers are recommended ?

thanks

coachpooh: that was really helpful! Quick question: did you do all the courses that could be transfer credit-ed before your first nursing school term?

JenforRN: yes, I did complete all the courses (bio, eng, phil) that I could take before the program. It really helped because I didn't feel as overwhelmed compared to the students who didn't take them prior to the program.

Hi coachpooh (awesome name!),

THANKS very much for the response - it definitely helped :) Congrats, I guess by now you will be approaching your last semester...must feel nice! I just can't wait to get the bio/patho requirements over with ughs ughs ughs!

Three quick questions:

Is PATHO more work than the two required bios? I heard there were no labs but curious if in effect there is just more to memorize???

2. Any additional tips in terms of getting through clinical placements?

3. No need to answer this if you don't feel comfortable: Is it true that sometimes the nursing program target certain students and make their lives more difficult than they have to be or make big deals out of silly things? Someone told me that they keep files on students' personality types and what upsets them? Is this true or just nursing urban legend of sorts?

Good luck with everything and thanks again...I can't wait to start soon :)

HappyFunTimes!

happyfuntimes: patho can be harder because it's more specific than anatomy & physiology. Patho builds upon a & p, so in a way there's more to know/memorize. Tip: study the new material every week! Don't wait until the day before a midterm to begin your studying.

clinical placements tip: ask your clinical instructor any questions you may have. Even though you may think it's a simple or silly question, there's no harm in asking him/her because you are here to learn. It's better to know now than not knowing later :) Your nursing classmates are a good resource too!

#3: I don't think the nursing program @ Langara targets certain students. I haven't come across or seen any issues in my last 10 terms.. lol so it may just be rumors? Sorry.. I can't think of any other way of answering this..

Good luck! ..it's a long wait to get into the program, but once you're there it's worth it!

Hi Ian,

I'm in Term 1 right now so I can give you a description of what to expect during these time slots. In Term 1 you go on 4 residential visits. On my last visit I shadowed a Term 2 student and my last visit will be coming up soon and I will be shadowing an RN. Also, there is a blood pressure workshop where you will be taking blood pressures of random students in the main hallway.

The part that says LAB means that on Wednesdays you will be practicing the clinical skills at school from 1:30pm-3:20pm. The part that says LEC means that you will meet with your clinical group from 8:30-12:20 at school with your practice educator. In the beginning of the term you meet in a classroom and the practice educator lets your group know the expectations of the program, how to write journals, and how to fill out performance evaluations. Later in the semester, your Tuesday lectures will be replaced with Residential Home visits. The start and end times vary and depends on which practice educator you get. Some students start 7:00am or 7:30am and end at 11:30am or 12:30pm. The LEC WWW component just means that you will be expected to complete some online activities and submit journals electronically outside of classroom time. Term 2 is when you will be at the hospital or residential care home on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I hope this information helps you out. Good luck in September!

Even though I still have to wait a little while, I finally moved up the waitlist from Sept 2013 to Sept 2012~ That's one WHOLE year! Horray!

Anybody heard back yet?

Hi jd8_lakers,

I applied some time around Oct 2009 for the September 2010 intake, and heard back Jan. 2010 that my anticipated intake would be Sept 2013 (I forgot exactly when I was placed on the waitlist... I would say some time in November ). Received another letter last week saying that the Sept 2011 is also full :crying2:, but my anticipated intake has been moved up to Sept 2012. So that's a big jump for me!
