Langara Change in Entry Admissions Requirements

World Canada CA Programs

Published

Hi! Just attended the Langara info session and they released some crazy news. If you're not applying for Sept 2016 intake (ie. You won't have your prerequisite courses done by December 2015), they've changed the requirements!

Previously it was:

1) Eng 1127

2) BIOL 1190

3) Stat 1124

4) 2 x university transferable courses

Now it's

1) Eng 1127 or 1128

2) Eng 1129 or 1130

3) BIOL 1190

4) BIOL 1191

5) Stat 1124

Crazy! It sucks a little because we could previously take GPA boosting courses to help raise our GPA but no longer. There were a lot of understandably upset students.

I completely understand why these changes are being made, and it does seem like a good idea. HOWEVER, it should be a change that they tell us before we sign up for courses. Bottom line is for the January 2017 term these requirements shouldn't count because its just not fair.

Exactly how I feel, I would not have had a problem taking the English this semester. Its just that the way I planned my schedule and to have all my courses done by May does not include nore have room for an extra two classes.

It truly isn't fair. I have yet to begin the first anatomy course. So far I am taking stats, and two electives that are not needed anymore. Since I have credit for ENGL 1127, I could have been taking 1129 this term! Instead, I'm taking online intro psychology and sociology. Have you started your anatomy courses, Kay?

I completed both anatomies through another school but unfortunately Langara does not accept it (BCIT, UBC, VCC etc all accept it). I talked to advisors and they basically said I have to retake both courses. I was planning (with the last requirements) to take it next semester. Now I'm not sure what I will do since I need both and they fill up really really fast.

Im planning on applying to BCIT as well, they seem to be a lot more professional and straightforward about what they want. However Langara used to be my first choice.

Wow, that's actually terrible that they don't accept your completed anatomy courses especially when other institutions do. Langara was definitely my first choice but now I am also looking at out-of-province programs. Hopefully you find better luck at other schools!

Sorry Kay, I misunderstood what you meant when you said "An extra English class isn't exactly going to prepare us anymore," which is why I commented. I agree that Langara should've put these changes in for an intake later than Spring 2017 and wish you all success in your studies!

Thats really unfortunate that Langara couldn't accept your A&P Kay, I'm sorry to hear about that! Honestly, it took me three semester to finally get into the first A&P (which I'm in right now), but it's funny because there are more than six students in my class who are on their first semester at Langara and they were able to get into the course without waiting, so I'm not sure how Langara chooses which students can take the courses and who should be on the waitlist. So for those of you who are still waiting, it'll only be a matter of time before you'll be registered into A&P! So, don't give up! I wanted to ask if anyone has ever taken A&P, Stats and Eng all at the same time? I'm planning to take all three next semester, but I'm afraid my GPA will go down hill since I hear that taking all three would be too much (not compared to when your in the nursing program, which I know is much, much more difficult with 5 courses per semester), but I want to focus on my GPA. This would all mean that I would push my application to September 2017.. Do you think it's worth taking all three at once or no?

Thanks guys!

If you sign up on the first day that applications open as a new student at Langara, you get an earlier registration time. When I was in high school, I applied to Langara on the very fist day you could and was able to get all 5 of the courses I needed for my first semester. I don't really know how they assign registration times after that, but I believe it has something to do with your GPA.

I took A&P, stats and English along with two electives in one semester and managed to handle it, but it was stressful. You really have to be careful in selecting which professor you're planning on taking each course with, especially for English, since that's the course with the most subjective marking out of the three. Most of the A&P profs at Langara have different types of exams: some like all multiple choice, while some prefer short answer questions. This could definitely have an impact on your mark in the course.

While I personally think taking all 3 of them is doable and worth it, I also think it really depends on how comfortable you feel with stats and A&P. If you have strong study skills and a solid scientific and mathematic base (stats isn't as hard to understand as algebra and calculus, but it's still a branch of applied mathematics) it will be fine. It's hard to say since stats is a subject that people either really understand or are really confused by while A&P is a lot of memorization, so it depends on your study skills and the effort you put in (as well as how your professor tests you)!

I agree with bigblondebun, you should be careful with who teaches the different sections of a course. I'm currently doing STAT 1124. My prof is super easy. The midterm was exactly like the homework we were given as well as the quizzes. On the other hand, my friend is doing STAT 1124 with another professor and the difficulty level is much higher for whatever reason. Make sure to research your prof before registering for a section.

I'm curious as to why Langara is your first choice? I did my Associates degree there and my Nursing degree at BCIT. All I know about Langara is that the campus is beautiful, but I don't know much about their nursing program except it used to have a 2 year wait list.

From my experience, BCIT's nursing program is known to be hard, but have a good reputation with managers and staff, and offers a lot of clinical hours (you enter the hospital Week 2). Their program also includes a specialty course which gives grads an extra advantage.

I hope I don't sound too biased. I'm just curious :)

I totally feel you guys, I'm in the exact same boat. But I was wondering if you guys think, gpa cutoff for jan 2017 will be lower compared to jan 2016 (~3.5), because of these changes?
