Allow adequate time for effective communication to take place?

Picture board may be easier as they don't have to spell words out. May also try anticipating the basic needs so the patient doesn't have to ask. If they have a functional side, could develop a system of squeezing yes/no to questions and then use yes/no questions to ask about needs. Could also do this with blinking. Calendars for orientation. Utilize hand gestures if they are able to use a hand-even the old #1 and #2 gets a point across!

Specialty callbells that are easy for the patient to manipulate? (i.e. the kind that you can press a cheek against, or a handheld light for patients that can't manipulate the bedrails). In order to communicate you have to get the person in the room first! (Then making sure that staff answering the light are aware that the patient is unable to communicate and that the RN should be alerted to the patient call.)
