La Roche University ELMSN Program (Pittsburgh)

Updated:   Published

Hello!

I'm wondering if anyone else has heard about/applied for this program?

Hey sophia,

I tell you it hard to get anyone to respond from this platform.
I’m getting set to go to La Roche for ELMSN in January. Not much info out there. I did speak to a couple students. One had dropped after a couple months because the program was too overwhelming for them and another who said it’s manageable.
I guess the first semester all classes but one are on campus with one online. I was told to expect to be on campus about half days first semester.
I also spoke with an instructor of fundamentals and she said that it’s definitely tough but manageable. Just do everything exactly as they say and all will be OK.
Other than that not much info aside from what comes from the advisor (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME) and they are helpful but have a basic understanding of the program.

Good luck. I’ll be happy to tell you more if I get through all the checks and get going in January.

Hi @Sophia, I am in the second semester for the ELMSN program. First semester, yes. Every class is in person except for one which is a writing infective course.  The program is definitely challenging, but it’s also very manageable.. I’ve been passing all classes & I’ve also been flying home every other week as well as going out sometimes at night. It’s very much about time management.  The second semester is a little easier than the 1st (in my opinion) but it’s overwhelming with the amount of work. As I said, the program is extremely challenging especially if you’re completely new to the field since they use medical terminology , but there’s no class on Med terms. @Luke, I’m happy to hear that you’re in ! Hopefully we could meet in person!!

@MamaTryin2bNP

thanks for posting something else about the program here! Glad to hear it’s manageable. It’s supposed to be very challenging!
you say the second semester seems easier but its overwhelming?

Im new to the med field but spoke w an instructor there and she advised I get a pharmacology book and get acquainted which I am.
Any other advise for us about to enter? Every bit of info is appreciated.

would be awesome to meet in person. Moving to pitt in a couple weeks.

thanks again,

luke

Hey @Luke Huff, if (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME) is your advisor, he told me to do the same in regards to the Pharm book .. it’s a waste of money though LOL I’ve never used it. HOWEVER, there’s flash cards that are amazing ! You can find them on Amazon.  They’re literally amazing. Also, mnemonics helped a lot, I always have some dumb ways of remembering things so a lot of my classmates come to me for help to remember LOL because it’s so dumb. But Youtube whatever you’re learning & they help. & for me, second semester is a little more easy as you only have one in person class & everything else is online. But the online work is SOOO MUCH so it becomes overwhelming & then doing the paperwork for clinicals too. But I am enjoying the second semester.  Definitely buddy up with you cohort so that you’re not studying alone. It works so much better with a group or even another person. Our professors want us to learn & succeed, so if you’re ever having any difficulties, definitely reach out to them. If you feel overwhelmed, reach out.  They’re here to help honestly.  & the fundamentals professor, she’s amazing LOL I love her. She’s so bubbly ! Pharm professor, in my opinion, was the best professor for the subject. Even though she gets sidetracked quite often. All in all, if this is what you want to do… You’ve got it!

I was in the first cohorts and I'll say it was one of the hardest things I've done. I'll echo the advice to team up with your classmates! If I had to do it all over again.... I would probably not LOL

Hi @celticwoman123

would you not do it again because it was challenging or because you think the program wasn’t worth it?? I’d love to know your opinion. Thanks to everyone for your replies!

It was very challenging and tested my mental sanity at times LOL but worth it for sure. I'm at a good place with my career.

@celticwoman123 I bet it was a wild rollercoaster! Congratulations on becoming a nurse, I know it is no easy task and I look up to you

Hello,

I am applying for the ELMSN Summer 2023. Can anyone give me information regarding the passing grade required for the classes. Also if I got in with a friend in the program, will the professors allow us to be in the same clinical if we request or are they very strict about assigning students in the groups that they choose?

@MSingh786 hi, so, you must maintain a 3.0 average throughout the whole program. As for the clinical you can get lucky, but they assign the groups, the sites. Everything.

Thank you @MamaTryin2bNP!! I wanted to ask if the exam format is written or is it multiple choice? I read a review that it is more like the Portage Learning and their exam format is written so I was curious to know if it was the same at La Roche ELMSN program.

Just checking in on all you La Roche ELMSN students and graduates... I've been working on my prerequisites for this program almost a year now. I've been going back and forth wether to do it, (If I CAN do it) and if I should just choose an RN or BSN somewhere else? How's it going?

I'll be driving more than an hour and 10 minutes each way to get there, plus I'm a single mom of a 12 year old. BUT, I'm so committed and determined. Is this doable? Is this a good program? Are those who graduated having the financial and career success they'd hoped?

It means so much that I'm successful at this, as I'm taking what feels like a very big risk and need to be able to provide for myself and my daughter with a stable career. Want to choose the right school that will be worth all the sacrifice....

Thoughts?

Thank you all in advance and for all the sharing you've already done!
