LA or NYC

I've never been to LA, and have lived here my whole life, so I'm kinda biased. But I would say that NYC would be a better place. Both cities have high costs of living, but in NYC we've got pretty great transportation. I can't imagine being in LA, where you have to drive everywhere.

I guess it depends on what kind of environment you like more (where're you from?).

Well, I have to put my vote in for NYC as well for many of the same reasons that tiarageek mentioned. Also, I just love NY.

I am far from an authority on the topic, (still in NS), but from what I hear 60,000 sounds low.

From what I understand, new grads here get about 68-72,000 starting salary.... I could be wrong.

and by the way, they gave me a annual salary. how is that? are they going to divided hourly? how do they pay up there? what if I did overtime??? can anyone please tell me the net income for an RN in NYC, weekly, I am single. Im afraid im going up there but wont be able to keep up with all my expenses. how much does a one bedroom apt cost in DUMBO or manhattan, the one with a nice neighborhood... I need to make a decision. thanks guys..

I can't help you with salary and such, I'm just starting prereqs. I can tell you that DUMBO is definitely one of the pricier outer borough neighborhoods.

Are you planning on working days or nights? if you are working nights, you could probably add on $5k. 68K is the base and as you gain more experience, credentials, etc. your salary will go up. Plus if you do work OT, you will get more (how can you still earn 68K if you work OT?).

If you want to live in Manhattan (which I would die for), you'll probably have to either get a small apartment to start with or maybe you can share an apartment with another nurse where you can get a larger apartment. Otherwise consider living in Queens and commute in until you can afford to live the life you want in Manhattan.

I'm not sure what rents are like in LA, but I am sure that they are up there too. Even if they are less than Manhattan, please don't forget to add in a car, insurance, maintenance and fuel (all high in CA).

Why would you want to bring your car with you? It would take you more time to drive anywhere than if you would take subway, bus or even walk. Unless you park on the street which requires you to move it frequently for street cleaning, it costs a bundle. Unless you plan to live and work outside of the city...I would not bring your car.
