La county sheriff dept /my license on probation

Published

Hello to all:

I live in the Los Angeles CA area. I had my license put on probation by the board for a med error that happened 8 years ago. The patient ended up ok because I found out what had happened.(system/clerical error wrong name was on the order and pt arm band matched name)

My last employer terminated me for having the probation.

My work history and skills are great. HOwever the job market is not so good at the present time.

I know that UCLA hires nurses with a probation on the license. I have applied there for work.

Does anyone know if LA County sheriff's do as well?

I know that the job position is working in the jail(s).

LA County now states no one with a probation on their license can work with them in their hospitals/clinics.

Does anyone know about the Sheriff's Dept?

I applied and took their test and passed with a high score.

I am currently waiting for an interview.

Any information is appreciated.

Hello-I have also been told the approximate length of time is 7-8 months. I was called within the week of receiving my band letter for a vacancy. I accepted and am now waiting for my background check appointment. The background check is the longest part of the process, taking 3-6 months.

When exactly did you apply originally? I just took the test Jan 7th, how long to get the letter letting me know if i passed or not? Do you know how many vacancies they are trying ot fill?

I find it interesting that this seems to be an ongoing process. I wonder how many they're hiring...

I'm a new grad and applied in December and have just recently received my exam date.

I applied at the end of September. I received the letter in about a week to schedule the interview. I am not sure how many vacancies they have now. When they called me there were only two vacancies. I am still going through the background check. It's brutal-they ask you everything from age 15 on...

I recieved a phone call from the sheriffs about 10 days ago . They told me to look online and see what the background check entails. I was told I would be contacted by the Background investigators.

They do want to know everything since you have started working!!!

They want to know all about you. I once worked for the govt and had a very big security background check but they did not ask for the paperwork the sheriff's do,

I suppose the govt did their own after you were on the hiring list.

I have not heard back from the background people and it is almost 10 days.

So I will call tomorrow and see what I should do next. I think it helps if you get all of the things they are asking for and present it to them so that the background check is smoother and faster.(this is what I was told by an HR person)

Good luck to all!!

Had the background check interview and fingerprinting.

Now I have to wait and see if I will take a polygraph or not.

Lots of paperwork to fill out!!

I will let you know when I hear back.

I did not pass the background check for whatever reason.

Well I suppose this job was not meant to be. I can't say Im not dissapointed. but there must be a reason why I will not be working there. Perhaps they thought I wasn't a good match for the prisoners.

Good luck for the rest of you.

Cheers,

I am really upset by your post. Why were you put on probation? Did the patient or patient's family sue? It sounds to me like you were following protocol. In what way do they feel you were negligent? If the arm band matched the order how is this your fault? Did the family object or something like that?

I recently made a medication error that was due to a clerical error as well. Your story is scaring me because I'm concerned that this could come against me long after the fact if that is what I think you are saying.

Hello:

I would rather not discuss my probation here.

I will tell you that I am planning on askng for an early release of probation from the board this month.

I will have to appear before one of their meetings to ask this.

Don't be afraid of the background or the interview process with the sheriff's.

I'm sure part of this process is to make sure you are a qualified candidate for the prison area.

Perhaps they felt I wasn't a good match for this job based on certain incidents in my life and my work.

I have always worked in public hospitals/clinics/private duty. I feel I am a good nurse with a strong background in many nursing areas. I have no criminal background nor alcohol/drug problems.

The probation may have had something to do with their decision.

Perhaps they felt I wasn't strong enough to be with the prisoners for whatever reason.

Strange but they have their reasons I'm sure

So just go and don't be afraid.

Your situation may be entirely different.

Cheers

I didn't pass the background check either. Crazy. I did stupid stuff when I was younger but have never been arrested or even received a speeding ticket. They asked for honesty and that's what I gave but would probably have a job if I lied.

After seeing another response for not getting the position at LACSD, I don't feel as bad.

I feel it is not the nursing background but perhaps the sheriff's feel that one should not have any history of financial problems, bad credit history, or any type of infraction in their past. The present situation doesn't seem to matter to them.

They probably would not have hired Mother Teresa!

I believe they have higher standards than normal for hiring nurses to work in the jail system.

Perhaps it is because of the prisoners and how they try to bribe or manipulate.

i know this is an old post, but just wondering if you went for a polygraph or not? and what was it like?
