La county sheriff dept /my license on probation

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hello to all:

I live in the Los Angeles CA area. I had my license put on probation by the board for a med error that happened 8 years ago. The patient ended up ok because I found out what had happened.(system/clerical error wrong name was on the order and pt arm band matched name)

My last employer terminated me for having the probation.

My work history and skills are great. HOwever the job market is not so good at the present time.

I know that UCLA hires nurses with a probation on the license. I have applied there for work.

Does anyone know if LA County sheriff's do as well?

I know that the job position is working in the jail(s).

LA County now states no one with a probation on their license can work with them in their hospitals/clinics.

Does anyone know about the Sheriff's Dept?

I applied and took their test and passed with a high score.

I am currently waiting for an interview.

Any information is appreciated.

I would call their HR department and ask outright.

Thanks I will try that. I had called earlier about the interview process but they are very slow to respond.

Im curious, was that test difficult? I believe its on medical calculations and common abbreviations right?

How do you study for it?

@frankieurhelper to answer your question, I just took the test a couple of days ago. Very basic dosage calculations. Not as scary as the tests you've taken during nursing school, I'm sure. I didn't even prepare for it because I figured I already know what I know. Next step, interview.

Good luck to the original poster with your inquiry.

I went online to study for the test.

I got 23/25.

Look online for LA COUNTY nursing test questions.

They have a whole page.

The SHERIFFS test is almost exact.

Not hard at all if you brush up on it.

This was on Aug 20th.

They said they would contact me at a later date for the interview but it is already OCT>

Let's see what happens.

I did call but they said THE INTERVIEW DATE WILL HAPPEN WHEN IT HAPPENS THERE IS NOT A DATE YET.

@shamanursecal how did you know how much you missed? i just received my letter a couple days ago for the interview and it didn't state my score. One of the women who was proctoring the exam said that the grade only qualifies us for the next round and not to worry about the score. I'm just curious because I would like to know what score I received. Should I call?

HI:

Replying to your post about the score.

I don't know why they posted that score on my letter.

All it said was congratulations! you passed with a score of 23/25.

You will be contacted for an interview at a later date.

At the exam the proctor said that you would be given a date.

I was not, so I called and they told me that the interview will happen but no time frame is available.

This is all I can tell you.

Glad you passed it. That test is not hard if you brush up on your med skills.

Hopefully I will hear soon about the interview but like I said I took the test Aug 23rd and so far nothing.

Let me know if you get the interview and how it goes.

Cheers.

Interesting. Sounds like we received different letters. I received a letter on Friday with a date for an interview (November 9). I'm not sure if we applied for the same position because I'm a new grad nurse and the application opened up at the end of September.

I'm a little nervous because they said the interview is based on a score as well. I'll let you all know how it went. Good luck to you.

Hi Berny,

Let me know how it goes, I'm a new grad as well and I just applied to the position online recently. This was the one posted on September.

Thanks! Good Luck!

Hi to all:

I had my interview on Dec. 2nd 2010.

They told me not to inform anyone of what questions were asked so I will leave it at that. I will just say that it went very well.(this should give you some idea that it is not a difficult process)

I did pass the interview and I was put on a band to fill vacancies.

I recieved my letter of band noticiation on Dec. 9th.

I was told by someone who works in the LA County Jails(outside of the La County System) that it usually takes about 4-8 weeks after you get this letter of banding to be called.

This person also told me it takes 7/8 months after you apply to be hired(including passing the test and interview). My understanding is that the background check is on going after you apply.

Hope this info helps.

I will write back when I get called.

Good luck to you all!!!
