L&D vs. M/B

Do you think all OB nurses should start off on PP and then move to L&D after a certain amount of orientation time? What are your favorite aspects of labor and delivery and mother-baby/post-partum?

When I was hired into L&D I had a few months ICU experience. I started on postpartum and worked it for 5 months before they oriented me to L&D. I now rotate between both. I personally felt that it was the right type of orientation for me. I had a firm grasp in PP before taking on an even more overwhelming amount of new information.

I sure it would work well either way. :p

If I had had a choice, I would have definately started on Mother-baby/PP first. I started in LDRP and it was a VERY STEEP learning curve to overcome for me. But obviously, if I can do it, you can, too.

I am a new grad who has been on PP for 10 mos now. I feel comfortable here now, and ready to branch out to other areas. I think it is a good starting point, you learn the norms first before doing lots of high risk stuff. I will admit that I didn't want to start here, but L/D and NICU were not hiring new grads at the time.

Once in L/D Chrissy, you will likely be very glad you started out in PP.

I'll second that Deb!!

I have to agree here. It's easier to learn the normal and get a comfort level there before embarking on L&D, fetal monitoring, neonatal resuscitation, labor support, etc.
