I'm a new grad who's had her RN license for three months and has been unable to land a nursing job due to the lack of openings in her area, let alone in L&D.
I am willing to relocate for an L&D position, but I don't know where in the U.S. is in particular need for nurses in L&D and will take a new grad.
Anyone have any insight?
Thanks!

Get a job at a reputable hospital in your area in adult med surg, stay for a year and then transfer internally to where you want to go. That's why I am doing. The hardest part in getting a job is just getting your foot in the door. Plus you'll have actual nursing experience and references to back you up when you apply.

Last week our L&D dept had 3 or 4 positions posted (noc shift). The manager was looking at hiring travelers just to fill the holes. Where are you from? I am in Eugene, OR and it is absolutely beautiful here! The hospital I work for is PeaceHealth Sacred Heart at Riverbend. If you are open to moving out here, it's certainly worth applying! As with any L&D jobs, apply even if you don't have them experience they are looking for- they just may invest in you. Also, I think we have positions open on our MotherBaby unit too (which is where I started) and if you are interested in working postpartum, it's a good way to get your foot in the door. Good luck! Let me know what you decide to persue :-)

I just moved to the suburbs near Chicago, from Miami, 3 weeks ago. I am also a new grad, I just graduated with my BSN this May (2014), but I graduated with my ASN and passed my boards in 2012. I worked at a pediatric office from 2006-2014. Anyways, I applied to countless positions here over the past month. The only positions I applied for though were NICU, PICU, PEDS, and L&D. The first, and only call, I have received was just last week to come in and interview for an L&D position at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, IL. I was surprised they called so quick, and I have no L&D experience except for clinicals. I am very excited and hope to get a job offer. If you really don't mind moving, I would suggest checking out some Hospitals here in Chicago. It was really easy and quick to transfer my license here too (just $$$ and paperwork). I have also found a few hospitals with RN residency programs. Here is my list of places you should check out:
1- MacNeal Hospital (Berwyn)
2- Adventist Midwest Hospital (Hinsdale)
3- Edward Hospital (Naperville)
4- Advocate Christ Hospital (Multiple locations)
5- Loyola University Medical Center (Maywood)
6- Rush University Medical Center (Chicago)
7- Northwestern Memorial Hospital (Chicago)
They all advertise hiring new grads!
Good luck wherever you end up!

Pretty much anywhere in North Dakota. I was hired on a L&D floor as an old new grad.

Great advice and that's exactly the path I took.
Thanks for the tip! I've applied for several positions for a couple of different PeaceHealth hospitals in the northwest. Hopefully one will pan out.1
Like I said above, I'm not getting any hits even in med-surg.

You might have already found something, but I wanted to tell you a little bit about my experience.
A few months ago, I was living in the Seattle area, working in pediatric home health, and trying desperately to get any acute care job with the goal of eventually moving into L&D, my dream job. I ended up applying to at least 100+ acute care jobs in Washington and Oregon, in large hospitals and critical access/rural hospitals both. I'd gotten certs for ACLS, NRP, STABLE and taken AWHONN's intro to fetal monitoring class, and had lots of friends in OB, both nurses and MDs. Still, no bites, just a few pre-screen interviews. I know for a fact that only having an ADN made it more challenging to find a job, so just know that it's harder with an associate's degree.
All that said: A few months ago, I saw a random post on Allnurses.com about how a hospital in Sidney, MT needed nurses because of an population boom. I applied and they called me within 24 hours. I ended up moving here in June to work as an OB nurse.
Not everyone has the flexibility to move for a job, especially to a small, remote town in NE Montana where it's -40 degrees on a regular basis in the winter. But it was totally worth it for me. My recommendation: If you haven't already gotten those certs, start signing up. And make friends/professional contacts in the OB field. But if that doesn't work for you, really consider expanding your search field. Even if it's somewhere you can't imagine staying long term.
Just my two cents. Hope it helps and good luck!!
