kidney stones!!!

hey all,

i am a new nursing student, just recently got accepted into a LVN-to-RN program (yay!) i still have limited experience so i have a question about kidney stones and nausea.

my husband has a history of kidney stones. a couple of mornings ago, i took him to the emergency room because he was suffering from one and was in so much pain. the e.r. nurses gave him pain and anti-nausea meds by i.v. and then he was discharged 4 hours later. we left with a prescription for percocet and an anti-emetic.

the past 2 days he has been miserable. vomiting and pain 'round the clock, even after taking his meds. the flank pain has been so bad that he's been taking ibuprofen in addition to the percocet. he has only been drinking water as he vomits everything he eats. he is able to urinate normally.

my question is: should we go back to the emergency room or wait it out? we do not have insurance. the e.r. doctor and nurses were not the most helpful in terms of keeping us updated with info. and they were very cold towards us, like we did something wrong. i vowed to never be like these nurses.

thanks for any help!!!

I don't think anyone here can give medical advice, you need to contact a health care provider. Hope your husband gets better soon.

If I were like that, I'd go back to the ER. If staff want to be turds, who needs em. But I'd get the care I need. If I have to bug docs to get the care I need, so be it. Hope he's better. Feel sorry for you both. Best wishes.

I hope they didn't just treat him according to his history... by that I mean, did they examine him to make sure there wasn't another possible cause of his symptoms?

If you're still sitting here reading this and haven't gone back to the ER yet, I'm telling mom! Better yet, I'll come over and get the both of you and take you there. Just let me know.

Kidney Stones in Adults

Renal Colic

My DH has had 100 kidney stones.... persistent vomiting, unable to keep food down had ureter obstructed and needed stent placed. Your DH needs to go back to ER for eval dehydration and followup regarding obstruction.

Best wishes for a quick resolution.
