use the action as you would to stop the stream of urine.

Yup, that's what I tell my patients. I tell them to practice the first time when they actually are peeing and to stop and start it. Then I tell them to replicate that feeling for their kegels.

The elevator scenario is a helpful mental tool for me. Imagine it is an elevator, have it go to the 1st floor stop and hold- up to 2nd floor- stop and hold, then 3rd- stop and hold...then release.

Ok, admit it, everyone who has read this thread has just done some kegels, right???

hey it's good for you!

lol... if they are still concerned that they are not doing it right... it may sound weird, but you can tell them that if they want to be sure they are using the right muscles they can place a finger inside their lady parts and they should feel it squeeze. There are also things they can buy to help (mainly for people with serious stress incontinence issues)

ROFL!!! I was totally doing them as I wrote my reply. It is almost impossible not to do a couple when you hear the word Kegel in my opinion!!!

i just finished GU, and this is from a study guide i made (from my med-surg book)..

How to perform Kegel exercises:

1. Establish awareness of the pelvis muscle function. Instruct the patient to "pull in" perineal muscles as if to control urination or defecation. The muscles of the buttocks, inner thigh and abd are not used in Kegels.

2. To help identify the correct muscles, have the patient tighten the muscles used to control urination.

3. Instruct the pt to tighten the pelvic muscles of 10 seconds, followed by 10 seconds of relaxation.

4. Advise the patient to do these exercises 30 to 80 times QD. Help the patient to determine cues to remind the patient to perform the exercises, such as stopping the stream of urine 10 times while urinating.

i hope that helps! :)

I like to tell mom's that they should do at least a set of 10 every time they feed their baby (breast or bottle). This gives them a fairly consistent daily routine as baby will usually eat about 8 times a day when baby is newborn.
