Kaplan Nursing Entrance Exam 2020

Published

Hi guys! I'm applying for NAU Yuma's nursing program and the Kaplan Nursing Entrance Exam is used for this school. I just took the Kaplan test yesterday and I did not do very well on the science and writing portions. Since I did not reach the minimum score for science (65%), I have to apply again for the next cycle.

Overall score: 79%

Reading: 91&

Math: 89%

Writing: 71%

Science: 60%

I want to list some topics that I remember from the test to help out future students, especially since there's not a lot of info out there. First of all, I thought only anatomy and physiology would be on the science portion, but it was not the only field of science.

Reading:

  • Main point of a passage
  • Interpretation of author's meaning
  • If certain words were appropriate for a passage

Math:

  • Fractions
  • Decimals
  • Roman numerals
  • Percentages
  • Flow rate (very general)
  • Adding/subtracting
  • Operations

Writing:

  • Mechanisms of writing
  • Subject verb agreement
  • Subject object agreement
  • Commas
  • Punctuation
  • Spelling (fairly easy)
  • Adding/deleting sentences into/from a passage

Science:

  • Know all the body systems
  • Know details of cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, immune and renal systems
  • Blood flow through heart
  • Airflow & gaseous exchange in lungs
  • Pumping action of lungs
  • Nephrons in kidneys
  • Puncture wounds (which type of immune cell phagocytizes foreign microbes in a puncture wound?)
  • Basic biology
  • Taxonomy
  • Prokaryotic/eukaryotic
  • Meiosis/Mitosis
  • Acid-base reactions & its products
  • Aging (super broad like is the taste sense the first sense to go?)
  • Symptoms of gout
  • Symptoms of asthma

I am very disappointed in the lack of clarity of what was going to be on this test, especially with the science portion. I think Kaplan needs to be more transparent about which fields of science will be on the test.

If there are other topics that I haven't included, please let me know! Thanks guys and good luck!

Hey guys, an NAU nursing student told me that acceptance letters should start going out now... has anyone received anything?

I have not received anything. Hopefully, we will receive some news by this Friday. Has anyone noticed any changes to their Louie account? Some people from last year's program said they were assigned an Accelerated BSN advisor a few days before their acceptance.

There was a change in my account. Hopefully we’ll find out today!

Thank you I hope so! And congratulations!!

Hi everyone, I’m also applying for nau I was told that the Kaplan has changed...new questions new everything. Which means my old notes are pretty much useless. Anyone that has taken it recently let me know what type of questions you saw so I can study.
IM WORRIED!!

help!!

The above post that quotes the one by fllynr is truly the most helpful. Know your A and P AND general science. I found the Kaplan study guide to be very helpful for this.

The guide also was the most accurate when it came to format of the test, especially the reading and writing sections. Getting familiar with what they are looking for in the answers really made a difference for me.

Personally, and after talking to others, managing the anxiety that comes with this test seems to be the biggest hurdle. I recommend finding a way to deal with that. For me it involves being as prepared as possible, early bed time routine the week prior, EXERCISE and not cramming the night or morning of.

Hope this helps and good luck!

All of these quizlets was very similar to the test I took two weeks ago. If you study them I promise you’ll be fine. I applied to a nursing school last minute and I only had 3 weeks to study, so it’s not like I studied for a while.

Hey there,

I tried to use these quizlets but all I see are answers and no questions. I’m not sure if maybe they changed them or if I just can see them properly.

Hey everyone! I’ll be taking the Kaplan August 9th. I have the quizzlets that was recommended. I also have practice exams to get familiar with the format and study the reading/writing portion. Which is my weakest. Any other recommendations? Thanks!!
