Kaplan isn't nationally accredited, what does that mean?

Hi all. I'm considering Kaplan for my associates of science in nursing. But when I go to the accreditation portion of their website, specifically for the San Diego campus I see this. Does this mean that I can only practice in California since it is not a nationally accredited porgram, even if I pass the national boards for RN?

  • The Associate of Science in Nursing program is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing. This program is not accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination - Registered Nurse in California, however. A degree program that is unaccredited is not recognized for some employment positions, including, but not limited to, positions with the State of California.

It means that some facilities will not hire you. Some state will not license you by endorsement even if you pass the NCLEX in CA. Schools that are not Nationally accredited are a big risk.

It is even telling you that the State of California may not employ you.

A degree program that is unaccredited is not recognized for some employment positions, including, but not limited to, positions with the State of California.
This is not a good idea.

You'd also be SOL on Federal jobs as well. Must have national accreditation to be considered for employment.

Thanks so much! I'm on a time crunch, my husband is military and we have 3 years in San Diego. BUT since he is military it is so so so important that I get a nationally accredited school so I can work wherever he goes. Thanks for confirming!

"Federal jobs" includes the VA system, too.

if you attend Kaplan and pass the nclex you will find a job. I work with a few people who went to Kaplan and are getting ready to take the test and have been trained in the hospital setting already. one other person has a job on the floor and I also ran into someone who does travel nursing and graduated from Kaplan. I think being in a health care setting will help you obtain a job quicker. my job don't care where u go to school is what I was told so im in Kaplan currently. lets just say a lot of schools have waiting list or if your not in 96 percentile you will get passed up! and lord knows I am not in that area. goodluck hope it worked out well
