Just starting the Journey...

I am making a major career change.... from over 15+yrs HR,recruitment, sales and staffing(yes 2yrs nurse staffing).

I am going back to college!!! Wow I am really excited:redpinkhe I am taking a Summer II refresher math class before I jump into Fall prerequisite classes so that I may apply to the RN program.

Any one here that has been in my shoes?? What is your advise ?

Welcome any comments:redbeathe

Been there!

Depending on how long you've been away from school, start with only one class... get used to the class forum and test taking again, then go for two classes or three as your time and money allows. Determine where you'd like to complete your nursing associate degree and find out their pre-requisites. Then plan out your classes. Also find out if there is a waiting list/period before you can apply. Some places will not elt you apply for nursing school until AFTER you get ALL pre-requisites done and graded. Other places allow you to apply before hand with conditions.

Make sure you polish up on math, english, and science. You will need to take the TEAS test to get into nursing school; it is composed of those basic skills. Each school has a different minimum score required to allow you to apply.

Microbiology is one dificult class, so take it after Biology and Anatomy/Physiology if you can. I personally recommend to take it by itself during a summer session, but don't take it on a 6-week term because you'll not be able to sleep (unless if you're a biology geek).

Good luck with your studies!

Also beware of private schools... most are accredited, but there are some that are not. Educate yourself about that and proceed with caution.

Hi there! I was in your shoes this time last year! I finally came to terms with the fact that I was not happy with my current job and it was time to actually do something about it instead of complaining about it. I couldn't change my situation at work, so I decided to change what I could- my whole career.

I was advised to slowly ease back in to the whole school thing since it's been 7 years since I've been in college, but I jumped right in with taking 13 credits my first semester back. I've relished every minute of being back in school (I've also come to realize, in this process, that I'm one of those people that will probably always be taking some sort of educational class). I'm loving every bit of material that I'm learning- Microbiology, Anatomy, Physiology, various Psych courses, Medical Terminology, etc. And it's all just prereqs! I'm so incredibly excited to get to nursing courses and material I almost can't stand it.

Best of luck to you! I can tell you that the second time around in college is completely different. My previous experience was a typical college experience- the combination of new social situations, adjusting to life as a "grown up", learning how much beer to drink to get drunk but not be too hung over the next day, and occasionally going to class. This time around, I have a job, a husband, kids, bills (real ones, not liquor store & American Eagle credit card bills), etc. I'm so much more focused and the quality of my education and of my work is significantly higher. I assume you're in a similar position. Best advice- hone those prioritizing skills (although, I'm sure if you have children, you've already had your hard core lessons in prioritizing). And don't forget to take some time to yourself to relax (one of my favorite things to do is to take one of my texts books with me while getting a pedicure- that way I don't feel guilty about the possibility of wasting time, yet I still get a little bit of pampering).

Thanks so much April and Devon!!!

I am thinking that at this junction in my life college will be a better experience. For me, it is the old saying "if only I knew then what I know now" type situation.

I did something similar, only my 15+ career was nowhere near healthcare and I had never been to college. I took it slow, finished my prereqs, and was just accepted into our university's nursing program.

My advice is not to listen to all the young, fresh out of high school students when they brag about their grades, form cliques and spread rumors designed to psych out other students. Remember that they have all the support of their parents and few of the responsibilities we as adults have. I was happy with my B average. It earned me a spot in the program, and I did it all while working 2 jobs, raising a family, and running a household.

Be kind to yourself, and GOOD LUCK!!

Thanks emajine,

I am hoping to be able to work at least part time at some type of healthcare facility. Yes I have major adult responsibilities too!!!:redpinkhe

Elec,H2O,gas,insurance,mortgage,food, kids, pets and so on..... none of it ever stops for you just because you are in school.. Wish it did

Come on in, the water is fine! :) I started at the beginning of this year. I only took one class (Intro to Bio for science majors) and I was scared out of my mind. It was a great class and I did really well in it. I actually regret only taking one class but it was my way of dipping my toes in to see how I'd do. I'm taking an accelerated summer course right now and 2 courses in the fall.

That is awesome leenk!!!

I am puttin on my wetsuit right now!!! fins, check.camera, check, air tank, check shark repellant, check rope, check, map of peaks and valleys, check, gps tracking unit,check:lol2::lol2::lol2::redbeathe:heartbeat

I was in the same boat .... almost exactly ... 2 years ago. Started one class at a time. Being able to focus on the one class gave me the confidence to jump in. Also it helped to get the A for a pre-req! Now two years into my new experience with college I am in my last pre-req and took 4 classes last semester. Even if I get accepted in the fall I will have 3 more years before graduation for the core. *moan* .... lol .... its tough! BUT! One day closer to a dream is better than one day just dreaming! I will be almost 40 before graduation. I do not have kids and my fiance and I are afraid we wont be able to with me in school. He and I both agree that its way better to love what you are doing! Even if I am the only one using wrinkle cream in my graduating class! LOL:p
