Ok. I will be taking NR170 in the fall. How do like it so far?

So far things are going well. I did NR 170 during Spring 05 and then took a break for the summer...I am excited to get back to school in August.

How did your clinicals go? After reading some peoples forums on here it sounds like a lot of people had a really hard time getting along w/ the nurses. It's kind of discouraging to hear that but I thought maybe some people were just overreacting. : :uhoh21:

I did my clinicals in Orlando and the nurses that I worked with were wonderful. When I came to St Louis for validation for NR170, I worked with two different preceptors at St. John's Mercy Medical Center who were both very helpful and pleasant.

My best advice would be to ask your instructors lots and lots of questions. I graduate from DCN in 6 weeks (yeah!!!!!) and have found all of my instructors to be extremely helpful - both through email and on the phone. Most importantly is to keep up with the readings and attend all of the chats.

As far as care plans are concerned there are many internet sites that can help you with them. Also get a good nursing diagnosis handbook.

If you have any other questions, let me know!

So is DCN for real? SOunds too good, Im sure its hard but I have been looking for something ANYTHING that would allow me to get my LPN or RN online

Yeah it's for real. It's hard and some people have dropped already. It's located in St. Louis but they have students from all over the country. The only thing is that you have to come to St. Louis from time to time to do validations. If you want to check out there website it is www. deaconess.edu.

When you go to St. Louis, how long do you usually have to be there? Do you have to go fairly often? I am really interested, but about 14 hrs. away. Not that the drive is so much of an issue, but I am a working mom, so that may change my decision as to whether or not Deaconess would work for me. I could do a couple of days here and there, but if it is usually more than that, I probably need to keep looking closer to home. :)

Thanks!

I can only say about this semester (although I have heard that it is the same for all)

we must go down for skills validation, which this semester means one day for 3 hrs.

maybe someone further along can tell you how much more for the other semesters, but like I said I don;t think it is more than one time a semester.

The only required travel for DCN ASN program is 1 day in St Louis (3hrs) at the end of the 1st semester. All remaining semesters require a 4 day weekend at the end of the semester. So that makes at total of 6 trips to St Louis over a period of 2 years.

Now if you want to attend labs on campus or need to do your clinicals in St Louis, then you may need to travel more. But if you can work on your basic nursing skills on your own and you can establish a clinical contract with a hospital near your home, then you won't have any additional travel requirements.

Hope this helps,

Cheri

I'm not sure exactly I live in St. Louis so I don't have that problem. I know for the class I'm taking this semster it's a one day thing. I know that you have to set up your own clinicals in your home city as you get farther into the course but I still believe you have to fly in for validations. I would call Deaconess and ask them the # should be on the website. I wouldn;t think that it would be more than a couple of days.
