So after applying to about 5 hospitals, one was open for an open interview and I just got called today saying I got an offer for nights, med-surg... im stuck because this is my first offer and i believe its a 2 year commitment they are asking... the hospital is a little further from home, but i am willing for any experience at the moment... however, i have this feeling like I wish I had another opportunity or more options..
with research Ive been seeing mixed reviews about the hospital staff and facility.
do you guys think a 2 year commitment after a 10-12 week new grad program a good deal?

I've been told that even if there's no formal contract or commitment it's recommended to stay on your first unit for 2 years to "repay" them for your training and hone your skills/critical thinking.

I despise anything with strings attached, but if that were my only option I think I'd probably take it. It's impossible to say whether or not it's a "good deal" until you get going ...maybe even until the two years are up.

I wouldn't want a contract of any kind, but I understand the need for them. What is the penalty for leaving early? That's what I would be looking at. Before taking such a contract, I would make a plan to pay the penalty if I needed to leave early. Living very cheaply, saving money, etc. to pay the penalty would be a very high priority to me. If I was OK with the thought of paying the penalty, then I would be OK with signing the contract.
Does that make sense?

No I don't, not at all - because the individual staff nurse has zero control over too many variables that can make or break the employment situation. In other words, unless it is a contract that is expected to be negotiated by both parties, as far as what's actually in writing it will boil down to nothing more than you agreeing to stay somewhere come hell or high water, or pay them. There isn't even the pretense of any guarantee of the quality of the orientation you are "purchasing."
It might be the way you have to go in order to get your first job, but as to whether it is a good deal - - no. It's a complete crap shoot, with you being the only one held to any particular outcome.
