My preceptorship experience was great. First, I was on the telemetry floor which is a very busy place to be as a student. I did most of my skills there such as ng tube, iv start, all aspects of medication administration, assessments, Trach suction etc. Gosh! I have seen it all. It was a great experience and I feel more confident to tackle the working world.
I finished my preceptorship in October. It was 150 hours, that is 3 12-hour shifts per week for a little over a month. By the end, I was almost completely autonomous caring for 4 patients. I would still need my preceptor to take out certain meds, but i was the nurse. I was able to administer all my medications without supervision, with the exception of IV push. I did all the admissions and I was in charge of all the discharge teaching, collaboration, consults. It was SOOOOOO awesome. It's ridicules how much I learned during my last rotation before graduating.
One of the most important thing i learned was how the unit as a machine really works. Even as a tech I didn't see the process- how the collaberation between the MD's, case manager, social worker, and the RN works. Plus, it was in a magnet hospital, which was pretty stellar.
Only 20 more days to go till graduation!!!! YAY!
