Hello all
I have come to a sobering realisation that maybe my emails have become the equivalent of Ronnie Corbets armchair monologues from that bastion of 70s British comedy. The two Ronnies. Not that I am currently dressed in a harlequin - motif sweater, nor knee high - to a traffic cone, nor prone to referring to my drinking habits as "suspect" its just given the chance to ramble - I tend to take my time getting to the point. Now where was I. Ah, yes. How are you?
I am new to this site and thought i ask a few questions as i have just accepted to study a Degree in Adult nursing at the univeristy of the west of england. I have been a great admire of nurses for a long time and i should of in hindsight taken the course after completeing my first degree in biochemistry, but i managed to get myself a good job and i got used to money.
I have been trying to find some information as to what i should expect from the course?
I am very interested in ICU and theatre nursing so if any of you lovely people have any advice please shout!!
Do you have any tips for success?
Ok i think that might be enough to start with, but it would be great to hear from you all.
take care

Welcome to allnurses. I hope you enjoy your course. I think you will find as you go through nursing you will find many different areas that interest you. Just enjoy your course, because the ones who do seem to shine. I wouldnt recommend focusing at this stage on particular areas of nursing, just keep an open mind.

i think i did that wrong!!!!
anyhow good luck with your training, if your course offers an elective placement (mine did 2) then you could request to try both areas as not everyone gets to go to these areas.
at my hospital the students got a week in theatres which is enough if it not your thing but not long enough if you get the theatre bug. i liked it so much i spent 3 months there all in all and went straight into it once qualified.
hope it all goes well

Hi,
I'm hoping to get into Nursing this year. Like yourself I got too used to a wage, but I've been in jobs that I don't feel i truly shine in. I like caring for people and talking and I'm not afraid of hard work.....hell I've been a holiday rep a few years ago.
I am now 26 and hope I'm not too old to go into nursing now??
Obviously I'll have to cut back with my finances now (do know you get a bursary) but I will have to get a part time job of some sort...any suggestions from anyone previously a student to work round the course?
What's the best and worst parts of nursing? Do you get past the "poo and spew"?
Would greatly appreciate your feedback xx

my only good bit of advice is- give time to yourself- the studies can be hard and balancing money isn't easy when you're used to having some- but you have take care of yourself- don't let the study and ward placements get to yer- have fun on good placements, get through the bad placements- and have a laugh along the way
you get past the spew and poo- you don't notice it- unless it's on you! yuk! my advice- get in a good group at college, share the workload, do your assignments early- using mostly journals- it takes the pressure off- accept that some placements are rubbish but take wot you can from them- but most of all- it's hard to balance assignments, money, homelife- GIVE time to yourself- have fun and at the end of each term, treat yourself for doing well and working hard- good luck matey
Hey you cant use the word rubbish when talking about nursing placements:lol2: . I used it once when talking to a student and she complained that I had compared her injection techinque to rubbish:lol2: It was rubbish but coming from the north and moving down south................I'll say no more

the course is ok, dunno what enyone esles experiences are like but at our uni it is a little infuriating when the lecturers dont seem able to sort out a fart in a bean factory but hey thats what makles the course fun eh? along with the mates you make, the placements and general student life. as for the age thing dont worry cos im comming to the end of my 2nd year and am 31 in september and am about the middle of the group age wise but still in the minority as a bloke.
as fpr the money it stinks but as a 26 yr old least youll get £6500 is a year bursary right? just dont come down south cos the rents are a killer tho i guess its totally up to you isnt it?

Cheers for the advice. I def wouldn't move down south as I live with my man up in scotland. He's helping me out a bit, but do you have a part time job? My bursary is just going to cover my general outgoings......so i'll need money for living.
Glad age isn't an issue, but wish i'd done it when i was younger and not wasted my time on marketing jobs.
Any other hints and tips greatly appreciated xx
