Just accepted to nursing school, don't know what to do.

Published

Hello, I found out yesterday that I was accepted into my nursing program. Class doesn't start until

September, so in the meantime I would like to get a head start on studying, but I don't know what I should focus on. Should I review A&P and microbiology, look up medical math practice websites or pharmacology websites, or what? I really want to make these months before school productive, can anyone give me some advice on what they did, or even what they wish they had done before starting nursing school?

My high school DID have my old immunization records and I graduated in 1984! I still need quite a few immunizations since many were introduced after I was a child but at least I can eliminate some of them. I hope that the records will be accepted for the program!

Thank you for the idea to contact my old school. Hopefully they will have them! Every little expense I can spare will help!

As a lot of people said, get all your requirements together, i.e. CPR, physical, immunizations, etc.

AND...if you can, get your hands on the syllabus for your class(es) and start reading ahead!!!!!!! It is going to be so much information in so little time that your head is going to spin within the first week if not day. So my advice would be to read ahead as much as you can, believe me, you will thank yourself later.

Congratulations and Good luck!!!!

Immunization question -

I am 43 and I have no clue as to which immunizations I received as a child. Do I start all over?

Also, for the CPR certification - Can you recommend where I can do this at?

Call your school and make sure what kind of CPR class they require, there are many different types, ours was a BLS one.

If you can't produce a shot record, then yes, you will have to start all over. I think the ones you'll need are MMR, DTP, polio, chicken pox (or titer), TB test, and hepatitis B, (hep A is optional for us)

Any community college should offer CPR certification. Wherever your going to nursing school should. My school doesn't require us to get it beforehand. Some health departments offer CPR cert.

You can get titers on most immunizations not just the varcella one. The titers where I live are about 50 bucks each.

For those of you needing immunization proof that you might not have, if you have had a child before request your pregnancy record. Most likely the did a rubella titer during your pregnancy and will be in the lab portion of your chart.

I did this.

My HS didn't have my transcripts any longer or shot records and I graduated in 98.

My school was very specific also how early we did some stuff, like the CPR and TB test. They wanted to make sure the CPR was valid for the entire 2 years we were in the program and that the TB test was valid for our entire first year.

Wow, that's pretty wild that they save paperwork that long! Yay for packrats :lol2:

In the months before classes started for me, I got the health & safety requirements done for my college (which was a long list of things!), and I worked. I also enjoyed some time with my little boy before I had to go to school full-time. I tried to be productive, but I also tried to relax. (: Just enjoy the time you have now before you hit the ground running.
