Just accepted a job in the PICU!!! Any advice??

Published

Hi everyone!! I'm so so excited to share that I interviewed and shadowed for a very large PICU in teaching Children's Hospital in my city. Well I found out yesterday I got the job!! I have almost 2 years of adult med/surg stepdown experience. I'm scared, nervous, anxious, but most of all just really happy for such an amazing learning experience! I just wanted to know if you all had any advice for me!! I don't start for another month!

All I can say is congratulation! I am pre-nursing student and have been a teacher of 7 years so working as a nurse at PICU would be my dream. I guess you already have a solid experience so I am sure you will be fine in your new position. So, enjoy the ride!

Congrats! PICU is the hardest/ best thing I've ever done.

My best advice is to practice saying this in your head: "I parent differently". Because you will meet some wonderful parents, and some terrible parents. You cannot do anything about the terrible ones unless a law is violated. Letting that go is the single hardest thing about the job.

Also- get REAL familiar with the plots of every single Disney movie.

This forum is filled with great advice about making the transition to PICU nursing. Spend a little time reading some of the threads. It'll really expand your horizons.
