I was wondering if it is possible to get out of jury duty. I asked them, and they was like I got to be taking care of children full-time, in the military on leave, older than 70, or taking care of a disabled family member. I really don't want to miss school since this is my 1st semester and it is starting during the 1st weeks of school. I know that it is a possibility that I won't get selected but I just want be prepared since it's in a couple of weeks.
on another note....
I am going to be required to testify in court, will the school excuse this absence and allow me to make up assignments?
If these questions are dumb, I'm sorry! I'm only 20 and haven't been in these situations before.
Thanks,

I called the court (number was on the letter I received), and I was able to send a letter stating that I was a full time student. I was excused and didn't have to miss any classes.
in California, unless it is the first week of classes or during finals you still have to appear. Just because you appear does not mean you will be selected from the jury pool anyway. Just check "financial hardship" and they will let you off. Just put a date that you will be available like summer or winter break, they will bug you again then, go ahead and serve while your on break, they can not make you appear again for another year.

Well I wonder if it is different in different counties of CA? My daughter has only had to call in and most times she was told she wasn't needed. She didn't have to go in at all. What bothers me is that she is summoned every year. I guess they know she is available?
edited to add my experience because I'm in CA too and have never had to go in. I was asked several times to appear but I always had young children to take care of and couldn't make it. I just wrote that and never heard back as is the protocol if you are excused. It would be a lot more convenient for parents if the courts didn't want you to come in so early! Sometime after school starts and more parents could make it. Let them figure it out though.
The rules must be different depending on the county.
I'm also in CA and the jury summons we get has a place to check if you're a student. You're allowed one deferral for (I think) up to 6 weeks - you have to put the date you'll be available and they'll keep track and summon you then. The judge can get pretty persnickety when he/she gets a student who didn't check the box and thus wastes the courts time trying to get excused.
I have been through jury selection twice, tho never made it onto a jury. I get my summons every 2 years like clockwork.
Good luck.

I was summoned for Jury Duty during my Senior year of nursing school, and when I showed the summons to my Department Head, she told me I HAD to get excused, for missing clinicals was NOT an option. Well, OK, I thought, but knew that judge had the final say-so. I showed up at the courthourse, dressed up in my nursing school uniform and when he asked me why I needed to be excused, I told him: "Your Honor, I am a Senior Nursing Student and clinical attendance is mandatory". He just smiled and replied: "Honey, you need to taking care of sick folks, anyway. You're excused". That was of little comfort to other citizens in that courtroom, and to one guy in particular who was VERY upset at not being excused, for he was self-employed and would not be able to make a living for himself and his family while on Jury Duty. I felt sorry for him.
