Joint Commission is a Joke...

Nurses General Nursing

Published

My Hospital has been preparing for the Joint Commission inspection. Frankly, it's pathetic. No saline locks in our pockets, no IV buckets left out on counters, nothing closer than 18 inches from ceiling. And, no concern regarding nurse/patient ratios of course.

Another self-important, entrenched, bureaucratic entity, that is impeding us in our work. People who have spent their time in academia, studying theory that was developed outside of the space/time continuum, in front of a computer spreadsheet. God save us all.

JC is another scam in place to enrich hospital executive-types. In fact, I would venture to say that they may be partially responsible for the opiod epidemic we're in. They are responsible for pushing propaganda produced by Purdue Pharma making "pain the 5th vital sign". Ridiculous-vital signs are physically measurable, objective. Telling someone it's a "10" everytime you ask is subjective. So, let's be clear, they make their giant paychecks by threatening nurses if they carry saline in their pockets or post a new policy on a piece of paper on the wall and then colluding with Big Pharma to push drugs that are so addictive that we have an opiod epidemic now. Gingers mom, MSN- you may have been on the "front lines of JC"-but I've spent 38 years on the front lines of the bedside,  in the REAL world. JCAHO accreditation don't mean diddly. Just another way for healthcare executives to line their pockets. Talk to me about how relevant JCAHO is after the pandemic...

^^^I've said this for a very long time^^^  The Joint Commission-a complete sham, dog-and-pony show!  Their conspicuous absence during the early stages of the pandemic are also telling to me, when patients most needed their regulatory oversight and serious corners were being cut; I.e. no/reuse of PPEs, absent infection prevention policies, dangerous understaffing....apparently their mission statement 'to continuously improve health care for the public' didn't apply during that time.  If it's true (doubt) that they really do strongly advocate for patients and desire to improve safety and outcomes; what could be more central to both goals more than realistically improving staffing ratios on a permanent basis?  Oh, I know; addressing facilities' refrigerator temperatures and improving restraint documentation-got it!  Oh yeah, and thanks Joint Commission for your 'Pain is the 5th Vital Sign' BS and creating the opiod crisis.  SMH

Also, does anyone else's facility announce a "Good morning. (Name of facility) would like to welcome the Joint Commission inspectors this week" over the hospital-wide intercom? That's just as much of a joke- everyone knows it's not a welcome; it's a warning to shape up.

Was just reading this old post and it brought back a memory of 1 place I worked. An overhead page would call out for Mrs XYZ. She was the wife of the facility's LNHA. She was just some phantom name that would 'spread the word' that a surveyor or inspector or other biggie was in the bldg.

That was the cue for everyone for 'pulling their act together'. Every dept employee knew!

Hadn't thought of this some 40 yrs?!?! :)

I worked at a large hospital that did this too.  For the life of me, I can't remember the code phrase that was used, but it was my cue to find a safe hiding place until the clipboard carriers left the premises!
