To the nurses that have passed through a Joint Commission visit.
Please let me know what type of questions I should expect. What should I study and what happens if I don't know the answer or several of them?
I am the type of person that gets very anxious and nervous when asked questions by somebody important. I get completely blocked mentally and cant even think of the answer.
Please help!

When i see jc folks, i usually go up and ask THEM a question. They leave me alone after that. And i find the pre visit fake-o practices to be a lot more annoying than the real visits.

The more nervous a person seems, the more the Joint Commission surveyors seem to pick at that individual with grueling questions. . If I'm asked something I do not know, I'll just tell them, "I don't know, but I'll find out."
Thanks do you know of any of your coworkers that had to talk to joint commission? I would like to study some questions they could ask me.

Don't say "I don't know" say let me find that answer for you or let me ask someone about that real quick then get the answer and come back to them with it. Make sure you are washing your hands or using hand sanitizer. No food or drink in patient care areas (think your coffee at the nurses station-no no while they are there).

Know basic infection control, like when you use cavi-wipes, when you use bleach wipes. What you do if C-diff is suspected. How long you wash hands for, what condition Requires hand washing vs Sanitizer.
If you are asked a question, answer if you know it, but don't embellish. Answer briefly, then zip it up. If you don't know the answer, tell them where you would find out. Know where your P&P are kept, and you know how to access them. It's ok to not know certain things, but it's Not ok to not know where to find the answer.
be familiar with patient safety goals, and make sure your med administration is proper.

Always wear your badge, and make sure it's facing the right way when you meet new people.
Know where to find the hospital's mission statement. (Usually on the website somewhere.)
Don't stress. Don't study. If they ask you a question you're not sure of, don't guess! Just tell them you'll go find the answer. Know how to look up policies.

One other thing I heard from others is not to BS them with an answer.... they know the answer, they are checking to see if you do!
