Johns Hopkins MSN Entry into Nursing Spring 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello!

I haven't seen any threads yet about the Johns Hopkins accelerated MSN program for Spring of 2018 so I thought I would start one to chat with other hopefuls like myself!

Also, if anyone who has previously been accepted into the program, any and all advice would be greatly appreciated! For now, I have a few questions:

-Does anyone know if all parts of the application are weighed equally or which ones they place the most emphasis on?

- I took the GRE once and I scored in the 82nd percentile for verbal reasoning (score: 159), 93rd percentile for analytical writing (score: 5), and the 55th percentile in quantitative reasoning (score: 154  ) Should I retake it to improve my math score? My fear is that I'll take it again and do worse!

- What is their acceptance rate?

- Any good tips for the personal statements? I'm finding that it's very difficult to articulate why I want to be a nurse without sounding cheesy.

- Where else are y'all applying?

I think that's all for now! I look forward to chatting with everyone and wish you all the best of luck!

My responses were right at the 300 word mark on the dot. I did respond to all three prompts as well. I applied late and I am currently wait listed so hopefully that helps. I also did submit a Statement of Purpose I had written for another application, just for some added clarification. It was not necessary and for all I know it might not have been read but I submitted it anyway. But to answer your question, I don't think it would be too much of an issue. Email them and ask! They respond very quickly and have been so helpful to me.

Thank you for your reply! They state on the application that only two of the three questions are required?Did you just go ahead an answer all three questions in NursingCAS?

Yep! I went ahead and answered all three. My thought process was it would give them a better insight as to my interest, intent, motivations, etc seeing as they don't ask for a full blown essay or statement of purpose like some schools. :)

Hello folks! I wanted to follow-up on my post and let you guys know I was accepted to the Spring 2018 cohort! However, I may need to defer for work reasons. I'll keep you guys posted!!!

Hi @franklin_washington,

I was accepted into the Spring 2018 cohort and I had a really hard time shortening my essays and choosing only 2 as well. If they say to answer 2, I would only answer 2. They most likely will only read the first 2 if you submit more than that because they have to get through so many applications and it wouldn't be fair for them to read more in your application compared to other applicants who followed the instructions. It's incredibly challening to narrow things down to 300 words, but they want to know that you can write concisely and get your point across. Short, sweet, and to the point will be more memorable than writing a novel. I couldn't choose so I had a few of my closest friends and professors read all 3 and vote. I hope this helps! Best of luck to you!

Thank you for your detailed reply! I appreciate it! It was very helpful! I emailed the admissions office a week ago and here is what they replied:

"We do request that you try and keep your essay to 300 words. The text box will only accept 3000 characters, so it that will limit your answer. It is only required to answer at least one of the last two essays, but you are more than welcome to answer all of them if you would like!"

And congrats on getting in! Johns Hopkins is a great institution! I do not think I will get in, but it is worth a try! I have nothing to lose. I met with one of the senior admissions counselors at the APHA conference a few weeks ago, and she was so kind! I would love to go here but nursing schools are getting more and more competitive these days!

You never know unless you try and I will tell you this, please please please do not get discouraged by overthinking and over-reading on forums like this! I would scroll through endless pages of people's perfect statistics that I don't even come close to and let myself believe I would never get in anywhere or that I didn't stand a chance. Comparison is the thief of joy. Sure, there are a few schools I applied to that I don't think I will get in but like you I went for it anyway. Johns Hopkins truly looks at you from a holistic standpoint and that in itself gives you a huge chance! If you truly have the desire to do it then you have just as good of a shot than anyone!

Hi everyone, another quick question. Once you complete the MSN entry to nursing practice do you have to reapply to the DNP program if you want to continue on to become a NP? Or can you transition straight through?

You don't have to get your DNP to become a nurse practitioner. You can become one with an MSN. There are post-master (certificate) programs that you can apply to but I have no information about John Hopkins' post-masters programs or DNP. Sorry!

@naida27

According to the online Q&A session that I attended on September 7, 2017, the cohort in the fall is much bigger with about 140 students. In the spring, the cohort is about 100 students due to the non-traditional academic start time. However, overall the acceptance rate is about 45% for both semesters. Hope this helps!

Thank you!

Ditto! I didn't think I had a shot either but I'm in!

On the essays, I answered all three.
