Johns Hopkins Hospital Nurse Residency Program 2020

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Hi,

I have applied for and received an invite to interview at JHH on a pediatric unit. I figured since there are previous threads for past years I'd start a new one for 2020 hires/start dates! Lets all keep each other informed and updated through the process.

Hey! I start in March 2020 too!!

Yay! What unit are you on??

For anyone that wants to know, I called nursing recruitment and they informed me that you should apply 4 months before graduating. Also, orientation is held every month. Sometimes twice a month.

MICU! How about you?

If anybody has questions regarding interviewing, onboarding process, etc, feel free to ask me ? I've been through the entire process twice (I was originally supposed to start in December, but my RN license didn't transfer over until much later)

Specializes in hopeful ED RN.

Hello everyone!

I'm graduating in May. I did an externship last summer in the ER and am completing my practicum in the ER this semester. From what I can tell, they don't hire new grads into the ER so I'm looking for a stepdown or ICU bridge program.

Can someone help me find the bridge program application and contact info for a recruiter? I've tried email but have yet to hear back ?

Thanks!

Hi All, Thanks so much for starting this thread. I just applied to a couple of units and the status of a unit changed the very next day to “Interview”, I am so excited and looking forward to what’s next! Lol. I am from out of state too and I am so excited to meet new grads on here. I have read the thread from the beginning and noticed something that most posts on this site is lacking.. This new grad thread and the replies, comments and posts on here are all so supportive, encouraging, respectful, informative, friendly and even caring! This is so awesome! I am so happy that hopefully I will get to meet these amazing set of new grads! I am wishing us all the very best of luck!

Thank you! Will there be a phone interview first? Or will I have to pick the dates for interview and fly out there? How many interviews are done and what’s the entire interview process like? Do they ask for your transcripts? What do they look for in transcripts? GPA?

Hi that position may have closed. I applied for a position and it’s no longer avail for people to apply. However it still says application to be reviewed.

So there's no phone interview! They'll send you an email with further instructions and ask you to pick 3 dates that the nurse manager of the unit you're interviewing on will pick. I was out of state as well and it honestly wasn't too bad!

I got an AirBnb nearby the hospital and ubered there in the morning - be careful with where you end up staying, because the area around the hospital isn't the safest. They asked me for my official transcripts to put in your applicant file and they make a bunch of copies. You end up bringing your file to your interview with you to give to your interviewer. The file includes: your cover letter, resume, copy of transcripts. The nursing recruiting office doesn't necessarily look at your GPA - they look for completion of courses, no failed courses, nothing with red flags.

Next, they gave me a cute little map of the hospital and sent me on my merry way to my interview. Your interview times is determined by your interviewer. All of my interviews were usually in the morning. The hospital is big with long hallways and lots of corridors lol so imo, it was easy to get lost. BUT there are information desks every couple of feet and lots of people who are nice and willing to help you out. Each interview varied for me - one unit asked me situational questions, like "If you got into a fight with a coworker about your patient, what would you do?" Another unit asked me more about things I put on my resume like "Tell me more about volunteering with XYZ." Roughly, each interview took about 30 minutes. They have this thing called "share time," where you follow a nurse on the unit around and get to observe. I found it really helpful and I usually asked the nurses on the unit more about JHH, Baltimore, where to live, where to eat (lol), etc. You will find that there are a lot of new grad nurses everywhere, which is nice.

For lunch, I wandered into the cafeteria. There's a cafe and there's a cafeteria. The cafe is more pastries, coffee, and expensive salads. The cafeteria has great food choices - I think there was a Subway and some Bagel company in there?

After lunch, I reported back to the nursing recruiting office for a presentation. There was a powerpoint on benefits, types of insurances, adulting stuff, uniform, PARKING ($12/DAY??), etc associated with JHH. After, you meet with your recruiter to discuss your pay. Then, I think I was free to leave unless I had any other questions.

Other things that I thought I should mention is - they tell you that you can wear business casual clothing and change into scrubs for share time. I personally didn't? I showed up in navy blue scrubs (navy blue = JHH nurse), bc I found that there isn't staff break rooms on the units I interviewed in and I didn't want to take up too much time changing in and out. No lab coat needed. Also, other interviewees did the same thing. Bring a little snack/ drink in case your nurse has a break to sit down.

I hope this somewhat answered your question and if I'm missing any important info, somebody feel free to jump in and fill in the gaps! I can't message you for some reason ? I'll just edit this post if I think of anything else.

Also, there's only 1 start date per month and it's not guaranteed on if you'll start immediately, because it depends on if the seats are full. I interviewed in Oct 2019 for a start date of Dec 2019, only to now start in March 2020 bc Jan/Feb 2020 were full ?

A PSA for anybody transferring their licenses to MD BON!! IT TAKES FOREVERRR!!! AND MD BON does not pick up their phones!!! I was placed on hold for 2+ hours on multiple occasions.

I can't wait!! I'm glad I'll at least know 1 person in my cohort ? I've been trying to message you, but I think we're both too new on this website lol

They had an ER posting a couple of months ago!! What I learned about JHH postings is that, every unit will post hiring positions every couple of months or so. The ICU bridge program may have closed for now, so you might want to interview at other units and wait. My friend who's been at JHH x 2 years started out in the OR but really wanted to be in oncology. I think 3-4 months in, she saw a posting hiring in oncology, asked to switch, interviewed, and got accepted! It was an internal transfer. That may be an option for you in the future?
