Johns Hopkins Entry into Nursing (MSN) Fall 2021

Published

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to start a thread for the Johns Hopkins Entry into Nursing MSN program for August 2021 applicants. I started my application this week, aiming to get it in well before the November 1st deadline . Anyone else??

After days of deep thought, discussions, and inner struggle..I have decided to turn down JHU despite their half-tuition scholarship offer (it hurts, it really does). I realized I prefer to have clinical experience in a bigger city like LA due to its huge population diversity and hospital network. I also realized I would like to be close to my loved ones for support and the fact that California is my 2nd home.

Good luck to those who decided to enroll in JHU! You guys are all going to be an awesome nurse!!

And for those who didn't get in this cycle, don't give up! It is NORMAL to be rejected for nursing schools application. Keep working on improving yourself and ask yourself this everyday "Why do you want to be a nurse? How can you make a difference as a nurse?". I believe in y'all ❤️

Congratulations! You will get an excellent education and experience at UCLA! I'm so excited for you and think you made a great choice! And as a fellow Bruin, welcome you to the family. ?

Just wanted to share some insight into why things might be taking a while. If you look at the calendar for today (attached), they had a DNP admissions committee meeting this morning! By the way, I checked, and there was no MSN admissions meeting listed on any day. My point in sharing this is that JHUSON has SO MANY different programs other than the direct entry MSN, and I'm sure the admissions team is working hard on all those other apps as well - maybe even prioritizing them over our apps. Along with that, I feel like admissions invest a ton of time and energy into recruitment (probably significantly more than other schools). At this point, they're already working hard to attract applicants for Spring 2022 entry (applications due in July & October)! They must also host and plan multiple online events each month, sometimes they have two or more events per week.

Consider the process of scientific grant review. First, each committee member individually reviews the grants assigned to them. Then, the committee schedules specific dates to meet to collectively discuss the grants and assign them scores. They usually have many grant applications but can only discuss a certain number of grants at each meeting. Let's suppose that Grant A is chosen to be reviewed during the first meeting, and Grant B is chosen to be reviewed during the second meeting. Unfortunately, the second meeting takes place one week after the meeting in which Grant A is discussed. It's important to note that whether a grant is assigned to be discussed in the first meeting or the second meeting is pretty random and completely unrelated to merit.

How is this applicable to our situation? Well, I'm pretty confident that most of our applications have been reviewed individually by now. However, the committee MUST hold an actual meeting (just like they're doing with the DNP apps) to discuss our apps as a group and make a final, official decision. I know it isn't listed on the calendar, but they're 100% holding these meetings. Just think about how awful it would be if each person individually scores our apps from a scale of 1-10 and they just add up the scores to decide who gets in. That's too subjective and they can't do that.. they must get together to discuss (and sometimes debate) the merits of each application and then all together they have to come up with a uniform decision. In grant review, they have committee chairs who do most of the commenting/debating, which could sway the voting members one way or the other. Anyways, I'm guessing that our applications (for whatever reason I have no clue - but probably unrelated to merit) have most likely been assigned to a later committee meeting, just like Grant B was.

Now let's assume that Grant A had both strengths and weaknesses, and the reviewers could not reach an agreement on whether or not it should be funded, so they will first review other grants before they decide whether or not to fund Grant A (not really how it works in real life!). Or maybe they like Grant A but they just need to know how much funding remains after all the meetings have been held to determine the maximum amount they could award Grant A. By analogy, it is possible that our applications have already been discussed within a committee meeting but is facing either waitlist/eventual rejection or further scholarship deliberations.

Hope this helps! Sorry for writing a novel here. You can see how neurotic I am hehe. ?
