Johns Hopkins BSN/MSN Fall 2010 Anyone?

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Hi all - maybe I am jumping the gun, but has anyone else begun working on their applications for Summer/Fall 2010 admission?

I plan on applying for direct entry to JHU, UCSF, Yale, Columbia, and Vanderbilt. With the exception of UCSF's 9/1 deadline, the rest seem to be due between 11/1 and 12/1. Although UCSF has the closest deadline, I am stressing the most about the essays for JHU. Anyone started them yet?

Also, does anyone plan on attending the open house that JHU is having in September? I would love to go, but I am in California, so I have to decide if it is worth the $$$. I am thinking I might be better off saving the money to fly out for the interview (positive thinking here).

Anyway, I would love to compare notes with anyone applying, or anyone who applied last year.

Thanks and good luck! :D

Hey all! I am going to be in Baltimore from the 10-14th for an interview at Hopkins for the BSN/MSN program. Is anyone else flying in to interview during that time? If so, I would love to meet up for dinner or coffee!

Congrats, Protongirl! That's awesome. Did you apply Early Decision or did you just apply for regular admission? I know that the regular admission deadline isn't until 11/15... so it seems weird that they'd start interviewing candidates before the actual deadline.

Unfortunately, I have to wait until the very last minute to submit my app because I'm waiting for a recommendation from a supervisor who was out on maternity leave all fall.

I guess I haven't posted on this thread in a while. I ended up doing great on the GRE-- 1460. Unfortunately, I didn't do so hot on the writing portion because I panicked a little at the beginning of the test. I only got a 4.0. I ended up re-taking it since requires a 4.5. It was really stressful because I hadn't studied in over a month and I was really out of practice on the math questions! I only went down 30 points to a 1430 so, I was pretty happy. But, I haven't gotten my new writing score in the mail, yet...

Yes, I applied ED. I was surprised how soon I was contacted for an interview as well, but they do have to make a decision before December 15. They are really efficient though, they received my application packet Thursday morning and contacted me Monday morning!

I am not sure if they interview every applicant to the BSN/MSN program or if they screen the applications first. I would love to know though, I am trying to not read too much into getting an interview! Anyone know?

Angie Grace - that is an excellent GRE score, way to go! I was happy with my verbal & quant (730/710), but not so happy with my written (5.0). Writing is usually where I shine, but it is just so little time and so much pressure! From what I have heard, programs are most interested in your verbal score - and yours must be in at least the 90% percentile!

Good luck (although it sounds like you will be fine without luck)!

I bet they do some screening before they offer interviews and I really doubt that they'd invite everyone who applies. If so, it would be pretty inconsiderate because I'm sure that they get applicants from all over the country and it costs a lot of $$$ to travel to Baltimore. I'd be annoyed if I spent all of that money and they weren't seriously considering my application, y'know? If I'm not going to make the first "cut" just tell me!

Edited to add-- Yes, my verbal score was definitely in the 90th percentile. I'm actually way better at math than verbal. I've just always been that way! I got a 790M and a 670V but, my percentile scores were almost identical since so many folks score so high in math!

you all sound like very competitive candidates. if this is the level of the incoming class, i'm excited to learn with such great minds. congrats and good luck on all of your interviews

I agree that it makes sense that they would not interview everyone, but how quickly they contacted me makes me wonder! It is impressive how friendly and helpful they manage to be with the amount of applications that they must receive! :loveya:

That is an amazing quant score Abbie! It is amazing how the percentiles differ on the GRE though - my 730 verbal put me in the 99th percentile, but my 710 quant was only in the 73rd percentile! I'm sure your writing score will have jumped up! How are your essays coming? Applying to so many schools is like a running a marathon! As soon as one amazingly stressful essay is done, another one is almost due! I still have to work on ones for Vanderbilt and Columbia, aacck.

Thanks for the kind words amojo! When I was at the open houses for UCSF and Hopkins I was really impressed (and a little intimidated) by how amazing all of the applicants are. No matter where we all end up going, it should be an amazing experience!

Protongirl - they do interview everyone, either in person or by phone, that applies to the combined BSN/MSN program. I applied ED, and I did my interview back on October 12th. It's not too bad. They just want to know a bit more about you as a person and why you want to go to Hopkins. Also, go prepared to talk about anything you feel didn't come across very well in your application. Hope this helps. Good luck, and maybe we will be classmates come next summer.

Applied ED Acc. BSN/MSN. Was confident at first, but after reading threads from previous years ,where other applicants had similar credentials and background to mine, I'm not so sure anymore. The combined acceptance rate is 15% correct?

Did anyone apply for the merit scholarship? And did all you of complete all pre reqs before applying? i did both, but I'm cursious what the status of most of us are.

Good news! I got my writing score and it jumped up a little so, I don't have to take it again. Phew.

How weird that they interview everyone! I definitely want to do it in-person because I haven't been to Baltimore since I was 12 and I definitely want to visit before I commit to living there for a few years. However, it would be nice to know that I was actually in the running before I bought the plane ticket! On the other hand, I guess it gives you an opportunity to make an impression face-to-face.

I'm done with 2 of the 3 essays. Or, at least I have really good drafts for 2 of them. I'm sure that I'll end up changing them around a little the night before they're due. I can't work on the third one until after my midterms are over this week.

Kapeejay-------Could you elaborate on what types of questions they asked in the interview. I asked the lady when I scheduled the interview about the kinds of questions they were going to ask and she said it would mostly be about the MSN portion. I have to do a phone interview because of my job and I am worried about not being able to portray my emotions correctly....bitting my nails!!!

Thanks everyone for giving me a place to come to where I know everyone is having the same crazy nervous feelings I am!! It helps ALOT!!!!

I'm a current JHUSON student, graduating in May and I wanted to let everyone know that a phone interview is perfectly acceptable if you can't make it to Baltimore in person. If offered admission, you will always have the opportunity to attend Accepted Students Day to peruse the city and the school itself. I did my interview via phone from California as I couldn't get away from my then job to take a long weekend. They don't look down upon a phone interview and its definitely very casual, more the vibe of a conversation rather than twenty questions.

Good luck everyone! ;)

Thanks for clearing that up Kapeejay! As much as I was hoping that they had narrowed it down before interviewing, given the turn-around time it makes sense that they interview everyone.

Congratulations Abbie! Given how great you did on the other portions of the GRE it seemed like you would be able to get the writing score that you wanted. One less thing to worry about!

Thanks for the information Asherah! Did they seem to have a particular focus during the interview? I am wondering if I should be preparing for the "tell us a time when. . ." kind of questions or if it is focused more on why nursing, why FNP, why JHU questions. Anything you can share would be very appreciated!
