John Muir, anyone?

Hey there, I was just wondering if any of you worked at John Muir Medical Center and if you liked it because I'm thinking about working there in about a year or so. Thanks!

It depends on which area you are going and what campus(Concord/Walnut Creek). In the Maternal and Child Nursing Department (Walnut Creek Campus)the people are great, they're friendly and helpful.They need nurses badly in the Post Partum Unit. If you work in the ICN/NICU expect to float a lot in PP and if you are a traveller you float first, forget about the agreement that says"no float"they do not honor it. If you are planning to do travel nursing and you are interested in working w John Muir avoid the middle man, cross country has the exclusive contract with them.

I love PP so that sounds great! I know there's no way of predicting what departments will need what in two years, but thanks for the input about the staff, etc. I'll still be a new nurse, so I just wanna make sure I'm not heading into the lion's den, if you know what I mean! :D :nurse:

hi im living here in sanfran and would like to know of some hospitals in the bay area like John Muir who would accept me as a re-entry nurse? maybe under a new grad program. The thing with me though is im a foreign nurse from the philippines, never had any work experience here in the US but i recently passed the CA NCLEX-RN exam and i now have my license card. I have been out of practice for many years, i graduated from nursing school in 1990. But i took a clinical nursing program for 6 mos. last year in one of the big hospitals in Manila in preparation for my coming here. I came here thru fiance visa early this year so i had to do all nursing applications all on my own unlike if you are being petitioned from the philippines by a hospital here with the help of a recruitment agency. Now im quite anxious if a hospital would hire me knowing my background, hope someone could help me with my situation. I dont want to take a refresher course because that would entail money and time, and i really would like to work right away because of financial constraints, even if the pay is lower than a regular nurse employee i would accept it as long as im being paid something. That's why i would like to apply for a new grad program because its an internship but at the same time you're being paid.

:welcome: Do not be disheartened, sometimes they prefer people like you because they can instill they're own"culture"without resistance unlike when you are an experienced nurse coming form another hospital(w the culture of ïn my old hospital, we do this and we do that").Plus entry level are cheaper, will cost a lot initially but in the long run will cost lesser. Apply for a Clinical Nurse I position if you do not have experience. Avoid Kaiser(Oakland/Walnut Creek) because they want you to have experience and talking to the Nurse Recruiter will just discourage you more, they were like that 3years ago and nothing changed as of 12/29/06. People in John Muir Walnut Creek are more friendly,they take new grads. Try surfing the website of Good Samaritan(goodsamsanjose.com). and Santa Clara Valley Medical Center(sccjobs.org) in San Jose.CPMC(sutter),UCSF in San Francisco, Stanford in Palo Alto.Alta Bates(sutter) in Berkely. If you know someone working in a Hospital or a Nursing Home(another alternative place to start)approach her/him, you will have a better advantage plus they will earn referral bonus. All the best!

I already emailed (but just did it after xmas so ill have to wait post holidays to wait for replies) my resume to some of the hospitals you mentioned like CPMC(sf), alta bates(oakland), kaisser(sf and walnut creek),what have you heard about their sf branch? I'll try sending my resume to john muir walnut creek, do some hospital do relocation assistance? just wondering coz i live here in sanfran. I'll try to visit the websites you recommended. I'm just a prenursing student who volunteers at John Muir but wanted you to know that I find the facility and staff just wonderful and would consider it an honor to work there one day. I also wanted to let you know that it is a fairly doable commute from SF, especially if you work non-traditional shift hours. Given that you have a fiance and obviously plan to be wed soon, you should know that the Walnut Creek/Concord area is a great place to start a family (big smile). I grew up in SF, and made the commute out here when my old company opened up an office in Walnut Creek. However, once it became time to settle down and start a family, it made sense to move out here and I haven't regreted it once.

Hello:Hi thanks so much for the info i appreciate it. Im just wondering though if the John Muir new grad program limited only to new grads and of a US-based school coz i am a re-entry nurse from the philippines with very limited experience. It just so happened that when i came here early last year thru fiance visa(I'm now married btw) i tried to challenge the CA NCLEX exam because i really have no choice but to go back to nursing to become established here in the US financially, and luckily i passed it first try. I sent my resume online to 5 facilities, 4 hospitals and 1 nursing home during the holidays,so far I just got one reply and that is from the nursing home, the JEWISH HOME here in sf, have you you heard about them? they both have a new grad and an RN refresher program for re-entry nurses. They just scheduled me for an interview next week. I would prefer to work for a hospital than a nursing home but if i get no replies from hospitals then what can i do but to just accept a nursing home offer. What do you think, how much time should i give myself to wait for hospitals to get interested in me? or should i just take the nursing home job offer if they do give me one. If its not a bother can you ask someone from john muir about my question, i would deeply appreciate it, but if you cant its ok i would understand, anyway thanks again for your reply, i'm so glad i joined this site where nurses support one another, wishing you all the best this 07, have a good day.

I should not be a problem re-entering the workforce after years of not working as a nurse. There will be some changes in how things are done but the nursing process of providing care will always remain the same. :nuke:
