Jobs for pre-nursing students..

ok so i am just twiddling my thumbs waiting to get into asu's professional nursing program, so i was wondering if anyone knew of some good jobs to have that are medical field related but dont really require any clinical experience. i was thinking something like a doctor's office or something... but anyone doing a job like that with any suggestions on how to go about getting a job like that ?? i am tired of doing auto loan approvals for my job:uhoh3:

Most pre-nursing students I know work in hospitals as CNA/PCT. You can take a 4 week class (if you're lucky you can take it for free at a nursing home) and it shouldn't be too hard to find a job somewhere, either in a hospital or a LTC. It's great hands-on experience for future RN's and it makes you more appreciative of what CNA's do for RN's.

Besides CNA, you could also look into become a unit secretary or a monitor tech (this usually requires no previous training/experience, the hospital will train you) or phlebotomy (this will take about 1 semester at Phoenix College).

Thank you!! I need luck, I have been looking for so long!! And yeah I heard today that some hopsital/nursing homes pay for your training to become a CNA, I would love to train in plebotomy as well. Have you taken any of these courses?? Do you know how much it runs to take the pleb class at PC??

I am currently a PCT (CNA with some extra's, such as Foley catherization, IV discontinuation, etc - really nothing fancy ;)) and I took the class at a nursing home. A friend of mine however finished the phlebotomy class not too long ago. You need to take two pre-reqs for the phleb-class at PC. HCC130 and HCC145AA (these can be waivered if you have at least two years of experience in the medical field). And then the actual program consists of HCE109, HCE111 and HCE122. PC estimates the program at a total of $600, including all tuition, books and clinicals.

I'm a nursing student as well, and I don't have any clinical experience. Another option along with a unit secretary is patient registration. That's my job in the ER and I get to see a lot of things first hand and watch how nurses and doctors respond to different situations. Not as good as being a tech or cna, but not bad either.

Well I have already taken HCC 130 and 144AA at scc like a year ago, so I might look into PC.. Thanks for all the info!!

Oh and missrisa77, how did you go abouts getting the job that you have?? I just really need to experience all this stuff first hand!! But I feel like I have nothing to offer any of the local hospitals

6. Restorative nursing assistant

7. Medication tech; medication aide

10. EMT (emergency medical technician)

12. Hospital transport person

13. Van driver

14. Cashier

15. Dietary aide

16. Hospital launderer

17. Direct care staff member

18. Personal caregiver

I agree with the above. While I think working as a CNA, PCT, or something like phlebotomy is ideal - working as an admitting clerk can be good, too.

I worked as an ER clerk years ago. I think it was a great introduction to the hospital environment, especially since you can get this kind of job right away without having to take any class or get any certification. It's a great way to see and hear what goes on without any direct patient care responsibility, yet.

The best job I had was working 11 PM to 7 AM in a tiny ER. It was so small that we just had one counter where four of us sat: the physician, two RNs, and me, the admitting clerk. I was like a sponge and soaked it up.

If you do go for an admitting job, try to make sure it's not in a hospital's central admitting office. Away from patient care areas, you really don't see much in a job like that. To the OP, good luck with your ASU application!!!
