I am a medical surgical nurse of 28 years. 3 years ago, I was crossing the street and a car hit me. My health changed forever. I am 50 and unemployed. I have applied and applied to many different types of nursing: Nurse Line, triage, case management, drug safety, medical information specialties, pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, clinics, medical offices, agencies, insurance companies...... I was recently told that because I do not have recent (within 3 years---LOL) experience, the agency could not use me. I can walk, I just can't stay on my feet for 8 hours with the only break being to urinate.
Does anyone have any advice on how to acquire a job in nursing with out recent experience? I am shortly getting ready to live in my car with my dog and cat. I am tapped out, exhausted and frustrated.

I'm so sorry to hear of your situation. After 28 years of experience, one would think there is a place for your in nursing. I know this sounds crazy but my only suggestion would be to take a refresher course in nursing. Look at schools with nursing programs and you may find refresher courses for nurses who have not worked for awhile.

so sorry to hear this, I would network like crazy with former work mates. What is your educational level? I ask since many jobs require a BSN. Good luck

That is extremely sad, 28 years of experience and knowledge, who wouldn't jump at the chance to hire someone with that under their belt. I would suggest home health or PDN, they are always hiring or maybe a shot clinic, it is that time of year...I wish you well, good luck.

Try looking for a job in a nursing home. I would think they would love to have a nursr with so much hospital experience. You could be a staff nurse in the sub acute or rehab unit or a manager/supervisor for the long term care units. Nursing homes are tough places to work, too many patients/ residents to care for and not enough staff. You will be busy and you will be on your feet all day so pace yourself.

Hi pegggysue0909,
Possibly try clinical trials, research, school nurse, employee health nurse or public health. If you feel comfortable enough, please tell us your home state or how long you've been looking for a new position. Praying for you !
