Job(s) while in nursing school

Published

I currently work full time at a company but I am going to need to switch jobs soon (very soon) as the company I work for is a Monday to Friday 8-4 kind of place. That means I would, at most, be able to work 16 hours a week. Our schedule for fall is up but...no time given for our Fundamentals lab so that 16 hours is a guess if the labs are only 4 hours each day.

Current NS or grads...what types of jobs were you able to hold while going through at least the first semester. I can get an internship at a local hospital after I complete my first semester (fundamentals at least) but what to do until then?

The only medical experience I have is medical records management so...help? LOL :D

Specializes in ER, Med-surg.
Due to the restrictions in the program I was just accepted into through my hospital we are required to work 32-36 hours at an absolute minimum to stay in the program. I'm not going to lie, it's a little intimidating but I've heard since there is one lecture day and one clinical day a week that it's doable. Good luck to you!
What kind of school are you going to? Is this one of the last diploma RN programs?

Many parents that can afford a night out are willing to to pay $15/hour for a babysitter for three kids. A note on craiglist should work. Say you are a nursing student. It sounds like you want to serve. The campus bulletin board should get some of the overpaid teachers as clients.

I work as a Shift manager for a mom and pop pizza joint. They are flexible with my hours and understanding of my schedule because we have 3 employees that were prior NS's. I work 28-30 hours a week. The first semester was tough but you can get through it. In our program we had a good amount of papers, projects, assignments, etc. I just recommend that you prepare yourself to balance studying, working on projects and care plans, all that fun stuff. In our program we were required to put in 4 hours of practice in lab before skill checks. If you can pace yourself, organize, prioritize, critically and creatively think, no matter what job you get for now, you will be just fine.

Thanks to everybody for the ideas! I have applied for 7 jobs at 3 different hospitals in the metro area where I currently work so (fingers crossed!) hopefully I can get on somewhere! :yeah: Classes start 8/15 and my last day here at my current job is 8/10. I've got my plan down regardless of what hours I end up working so I feel a little better. Of course, I'll feel great once I get that replacement income
